Hi everyone. I have just made a toolholder that iv’e been wanting to do for the last 2 years. A friend gave me some very good expensive lathe cutter inserts, but I did not have a toolholder for them. Hence these 2 video’s of me making one. I hope you enjoy.

      Steve.

The tip of the insert needs support, it could well break off otherwise

Yes needs to be directly under the tip and angled to the same degree as the tip.

You can run an insert without tip support, but it will of course limit how heavy cuts it will handle. Several of my holders are discarded from a machine shop due to damaged seats, and they hold up just fine for hobby use.

My last tool holder was £14 on eBay and came with an insert. Not sure it’s worth making them at that price unless it’s something special?

They are solid triangle inserts, see how many you can find.

100% solid except for the hole in the middle.

If I had a good stock of odd inserts I would use the spark eroder to create the pocket. From passed work I would expect it to take about 10 mins. A tip should make an electrode and the over cut is about 4 thou. Noel

Hi Vic. I searched ebay & the only holder I could find that would take those inserts was a 20mm industrial one , which is way too large for my little lathe. Also sometimes, in fact many times I make things that cost nothing. Some of the items as you say can be bought for a little money. However I like to dabble in the workshop.

                      Steve.

As we all know there are so many different cutter tips out there. I have boxes of them , which I will post a little vid of showing them. Nearly all of them were gifted to me from friends. Unfortunately quite a few from departed friends families.

So I will have to make some more holders for them.

                        Steve.

Just a short video of the many different types of cutter inserts. I am sure there are many more on the market.

The one I bought had a 16mm shank. Too big for my little 8 1/2” x 14” but I took 2mm off the bottom with a carbide mill. The TNMG’s have 6 cutting tips so very economical to use. I know what you mean about making your own tooling though.

Edit: Even cheaper now. Only £10.80. But no insert.

Hi Vic. I think I saw them once but ignored as the holder was left hand Meaning pointing to the right & not the left.

The picture shows both left and right hand but the description does say left. Maybe that’s why it’s a few quid less? Mines very well made and the shank was of Hardened steel so I had to take it slow with the carbide mill when I trimmed it down. Recommended if you can get one to fit your lathe, albeit with some modification.

Steviegtr’s toolholder would be better if he had tilted the tip of the insert downwards 7 degrees to give it the correct clearance. For his straight type, the blank could have been tilted in the milling vise, and the clamping screwhole drilled and tapped in the same setup. All neutral inserts have their seatings dipping for clearance because the face is 90 degrees for double sided types. The pictures in Vic’s advert show the dip, which is on the axis between the tip and the centre of the insert, whichever way it is pointing relative to the tool shank.

Hi old mart. I take it you never watched the video. Showing tilting in the vice. I only used 3 degree tilt. I also drilled the hole for the pin at same time.

3 degrees would be fine for home turning, the 7 that I mentioned is the common angle for neutral inserts of all shapes, as I have measured them. I have a small 3″ vise with multiple movements which is my prefered method for holding custom made insert holders. The last one was for holding round double sided milling inserts for use in lathes. The inserts are doublesided and the thickness is almost half the diameter. I tilted them for a righthanded toolholder and made the front face about 0.010″ low on purpose.
