I have a Blackhawk spot welder and need someone with same welder to post a close up photo of the rod with the spring on it that connects handle to the lower electrode swivel. Model I WE 1200. Probably 70’s or 80’s. Looks like the rod has been got at on left end in close up photo and spring does not keep electrodes apart . I can’t find any info on this welder on the web. A parts list diagram would be a godsend.

I have not seen that make of spot welder before. I doubt if the small spring that is visible is the one that determines the clamping force that needs to be applied to the electrodes at the point where the current pulse is triggered. I would expect the upper handle to be set higher since it will need to be squeezed with quite a bit of force. Have you tried screwing in the knurled adjustment so as to raise the upper handle 30mm or so? Squeezing it should then move it against a strong spring until a point is reached where a micro switch is triggered. There may be a separate spring to retract the electrode jaws, though on my spot welder the jaw pivot is a bit stiff, and you merely open the jaws by hand. I presume this is to avoid unnecessary extra work when going along a seam making a series of welds.

If it still does not work, you need to look for a broken or missing spring somewhere.

Not my area of expertise, but you could try the BlackHawk website.

Welder is now working and pulse or single welds also ok. It still needs that extra spring on trigger to keep jaws open until trigger is pulled and work is clamped. I did turn up the electrodes on my lathe with an angle so tip is around 3/16″ and that helped the weld a lot. It is pretty heavy and I would not want to work for long with it if it was mine.!!

I have sent a message to Blackhawk UK to see if they have any info on it. I won’t hold my breath though.

            Mike.
