Just scored this lovely little thing a few days ago.

It’s pretty clean for it’s age not the top end ones having no gearbox or power feeds but i do have a bunch of change gears with it.

Currently striped to degunk and repaint.

I know parts will be pretty much impossible to source but it sure is a soldi bit of kit compared to a 8×16 china special i was going to buy.

Any other members here have a sheldon? I have joined a dedicated group but thought i would post here too.

        A great find!

It doesn’t look as if you’d need find parts for the lathe itself, though any Sheldon accessories might be with the poultry-denture and round-tuit dealers.

I note the flat-belt drive using a toothed-belt inside out. It evidently works, and if one I happen to have here is typical, they seem to have a slightly rough surface that would help grip the pulley. They have little or no stretch, as that would compromise their intended function; but nor did the leather or canvas belts originally used on machine-tools.

Yep it was more the accessories like the steadies and possibly a gearbox and apron with power feed that would be hard to source.

The rest like you said is luckily there and yea pretty nice idea for the modern belt.

Got some felt coming to replace the old ones on the wipers and will be knocking up a small stand from some box section and some metal sheet for a tray.

Have you got an Alignment Bar, to realign the Headstock once reassembled?

Once the Headstock has been aligned, the bar can be used to align the Tailstock.

Should be quite a useable machine, once clean, reassembled and aligned.

Don’t be worried about its age, as long as it is not horribly worn.

            Many a good tune etc.

No i do not unfortunately but will not be used for extremely precise work at the moment.

The ways look pretty good apart from a few little dings near the chuck which is to be expected.

Got some Gloss Mid Brunswick Green paint coming so should look nice soon.

When the Headstock is replaced, it will need to be realigned with the bed, so there will be time spent in clocking and careful adjustment.

Ideally, an Alignment bar would be used in the Morse Taper in the spindle (Use a piece of silver steel in the 3 jaw chuck. Do not rotate the chuck during this procedure)

Once the Headstock is aligned, you can fit the 4 four jaw chuck, clock the silver steel and when acceptably centred (As close as possible; within 0.0005″ would be my goal) and centre drill it.

Reverse the bar, and recentre, and then centre drill.

You now have an alignment bar which can be used between centres, to align the Tailstock.

Put the centres in the Headstock Spindle, and trim them (Top Slide set over by 30 degrees), before use.

The Tailstock centre might well be hardened, so not need, or be suitable for, trimming. The centre for the spindle should be soft, and so easily just cleaned up for use.
