Item 6. on the parts list says it all doesn’t it ?

The only thing that surprised me was it being described as steel [presumably a trick of the light that the one in the photo looks more like brass]

        .

P.S. __ do you have the rest of that Patent Number ?

The threads will be 18mm or 14mm ( I think ) eg spark plug sizes so weld an old plug to a bit of stock having smashed out the insulator. You can now make all the modern sizes ! Noel.

On reflection and in the cold light of day in an imperial world 1″ hex looks a better choice. Noel.

More pictures and details on this interesting little vice in this discussion thread :-

                      https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/record-74-auto-vice.115274/

Look to be fairly readily obtainable on E-Bay at not too silly prices, £50 to £100, so Record probably made a lot. Surprised I’ve never seen one. Albeit all the listings appear to be without pipe jaws, although the thread suggests replicas have been sold via E-Bay but the link is obsolete so no idea if still around.

Probably a decent work holder choice to go on a Workmate (clone!) for someone who takes their dirty clean up and weld grinding type work outside. (I have a no-name 4″ which pretty much holds anything too small to clamp to the workmate).

Comparisons with the cheap small “Swistens Clone” rotating vices, such as the Clarke CMV100, which are probably the modern equivalent interns of a general purpose vice are interesting. Another potentially good choice as a workmate accessory.

Intrigued to find out from that thread about the built in pipe bender on my little Record Imp. Why didn’t someone tell me that about 30 years ago when I had a lot ob brake pipe to bend neatly.

When I read your earlier post, I thought your original choice was inspired by your mention of 14mm spark plug threads and thought it a clever suggestion.

To me, it would be sensible to make the hexagon the same as that of the spark plug, so you could use the same plug spanner to install it.

I had to go and look it up, but it appears modern plugs use 20mm A/F.

Always a dilemma: do you make it period correct so it fits nothing modern or make a copy to suit today’s threads and A/F sizes?

Thanks, Michael – I’ve never seen that site patent before. I grabbed it!

Noel – Agreed. To scale off that photo it’s approx 21mm (7/8″?) – Is 7/8″ available? So, will have to be 1″. And prob 4 1/2″ long.

Clive – there are a lot of them about actually. You’ll have seen on eBay people trying to get £100’s for them LMAO. All the parts are available incl. period correct paint, spring kits, missing parts, jaws, pipe clamp. You could spend between £25 and £ 100plus on this project so buy wisely. There is no money in restoring it, just a decent vice if you need another.

DC: Good points mentioned. I think the threads today would need to be as mentioned above 18×1.5mm and 14×1.25mm. Does anyone know of any US&UK imperial plug sizes?

Of course, simple to turn – so could make both as easy as making one (with the right dies).

BTW: The cheapest (BGS) dies seem to be approx £7 each; +1″ MS Hex bar (£10-20). So, approx £30 + time?

Then I’d have to buy something with a knackered engine to even use it.

Back to square 1, I think.

Does anyone have a ‘Record Cylinder head holding plug’ I can have?

                          cheers

Hi, I’ve got a Record Garage vice No. 75, which is similar to the 74, but a little larger.

                            Record 75 catalog page-XL (1)

I refurbished it 17 months ago, and it can be viewed Record No.75 #1 and Record No. 75 #2

                            Vice#75

I don’t have the cylinder holding plug, and it seems to be one of those things that often go missing, either by being lost, damaged or by others that didn’t know there was one associated to these vices.

                            Regards Nick.

Hi Danni, there are a few of them about, but you might not like the price of them, but make sure you can see some good pictures, as I’ve seen one that has a bit busted from the pipe forming part on the sliding jaw. Mine cost me a Tenner about ten years ago, from a chap at work who was selling it for a friend of his.

                                    Regards Nick.

Look at the 18 mm thread ! + 1.5 or 2mm both sides =21/22mm + the step to the hexagon 1mm on both sides ! so 24mm hex or 1″ or 15/16″. 22mm or 7/8″ is to small. As for other sizes, There’s 10mm,motor cycle, there’s taper seat eg ford pinto engine, vauxhall I think used 5/8″ taper seat. Hex sizes, there are many, 5/8″, 11/16″, 3/4″ 13/16″ are some.  Noel.

PS  Somewhere in the shed I have a machine a bit like this that was the DIYers dream and would do many things, I can’t remember the name, or which shed it’s in ! N.

Noel, you may be correct. looking again the shoulder on at 18mm end looks to be 24mm. So 1″ it is.
