Can someone explain the function of the magnets which are supplied as an option extra with the 3D printed back gear locks available for the 60T Myford S7 lathe as seen on ebay. The attachment is designed to be supported by the headstock casing but I cannot see the role played by the pair magnets.

        Presumably this one?https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315011671504

The blurb on the left includes this:

        s7magnets

So, just a feature allowing the lock to be stuck to any nearby steel for storage.   The following page describes the strap hole top-right, making it clear you have to provide your own strap!

…or are they to ‘stick’ the plastic block to the bull gear?

Is this intended as an alternate to the spindle lock that Myford built into the lathe?

I wondered if it might be possible to modify one to function as a detent for indexing applications.

Why would you stick it to your dial indicator stand as shown in the pic???

Greensands: I would think a conventional single point detent plunger would be more reliable and easier to use than a multi-tooth jobbie like this one?.

My guess is it’s designed to reduce the chance of breaking a tooth off the bull wheel whilst attempting to remove a stuck chuck.

The teeth in the plastic part engage with the teeth on the bull gear. When the item is used in that manner, there is only air where the magnets are (nothing to stick them to).

Surely the S7 has its own spindle lock

The early ones, like my old S7, did not. At sometime one was introduced. The only place I have heard of broken bull-wheels is this forum. I am sure it did happen otherwise why introduce a spindle lock.

I may be thick but I don’t understand this topic. What have magnets got to do with spindle locks? Magnetics appear to be offered as the universal cure to everything. Actually they are just a curse, slowly anything iron or steel in the workshop becomes magnetised.

I presume its to stop it falling out of mesh

This version of the tool eliminates magnet angst by not having any!

Nothing complicated going on.  The magnets allow the tool to be stuck to a splashback or other metal surface when not in use.

The one on Thingiverse has a picture showing one in magnet assisted storage……
