Fitting a milling vice to a Sieg C3 lathe

I have a Sieg C3 type lathe and picked up a milling vertical slide/vice recently. This has a hefty 90 bracket and a vertical slide and a vice attached. A little bit big for the C3 but never mind.

Firstly, if I remove the topslide by undoing two allen screws holding the topslide swivel down does a plate under the crosslide swivel stay in place or fall out? Not a big problem but a nuisance to avoid.

Secondly the commercial vertical slides look as if they fit in this place, but it looks a bit too far away from the chuck centreline to be particularly convenient – but saves drilling holes in the crosslide casting.

I have contemplated buying a spare crosslide casting and modding that if necessary.

Has anyone any experience or words of advice?

The Sieg one is intended to mount using the two screws that hold the topslide and also has a hole to clear the central pin.

Plate won’t drop out.

Prepare to be disappointed! Whilst extraordinary work was done in the past with milling slides on lathes, my experience of one on a mini-lathe was deeply frustrating. Fundamental problem is space, rigidity and movement are all severely restricted such that jobs that are easy on a real mill are downright difficult on a milling slide.

My slide annoyed me so much I saved up for a mill.
