I found this facinating, thanks for posting, I thought initially, that the rolling surfaces would be circular, but its even cleverer than that

As usual though, nature having several hundered million years to practice with got there first, and because there have been no replies I have to assume all this is comon knowledge.

Perhaps if it were applied to steam engine valve gear design, variable velocities etc, there’d be more takers. 🙂

The Citroen 2CV car suspension used tension rods connecting to spring units. At the other end for the connection to the suspension arm there was by an eye, maybe 20mm internal diameter. On the arm was a “knife edge” taking the spring force, actually with a small radius. Once working, this found an operating point such that it always rolled with no sliding motion. They lasted the life of the car with no obvious wear.

If anyone has snapped an anterior cruciate ligament in their knee, they will have found out that this elegant mechanism isn’t very fault-tolerant…
