Anyone know if there's anything like this still around?

A compact unit which seems to do a comprehensive amount of tasks for ME stuff

(starting to think about Santa stuff)

oddly enough I ordered one very similar earlier this week !

unfortunately I'm on the other side of the rock to you so my supplier is useless to you unless you like paying for freight ! but I would expect any half decent M.E supplier to have one or maybe EBAY ?

I am looking forward to using this unit as it looks like it very versatile.

If I remember correctly there an article in MEW for making one ?

          Ian.

              Ady,

We bought one of these when they first came out for our R&D department. I bought one for myself a couple of months ago from Chronos and can confirm that it is the same item except that it now comes in a sturdy plastic tool box rather than expanded polystyrene. Search for Universal Metal Bender, about £55.

Axminster sell a "metal bender" which looks identical.

I've got one of these and it's really useful. I never got any instructions, and I would love to know how to make the more complex shapes. Is there any chance of someone posting the second part of the ME article that Ady posted, or is that pushing copyright too far for this board?

The Axminster Sieg bender looks quite a bit different but may be just as functional.

For what it's worth (not much), here's a Link to the instruction sheet included in the current CZ (now Groz) version

The original CZ bender was made in East Germany not India like the Groz version.

Saw one demonstrated at our local "men's shed" where an artist was using flat bar to make steel sculptures. Very easy to bend and roll steel flat bar.

Had a go with my new bender last night and it all seems fine but I do have some IMO qualifications

The fits and build quality can best be described as medium, you must be careful to ensure all the sections and pins are as they should be, I'm going to tweek at least one pin to give it more length when it seats into the casting

The "maximum capacities" really are on the limits of what this tool can do but it will cope very capably with lighter model engineering jobs, just don't expect it to do it's max work straight out of the box, especially if you are a heavy handed worker

With care, and some TLC, this is a phenomenally versatile tool for the workshop.

At first when you look at all the parts and fittings you wonder if you will ever figure all it's capabilities out but within an hour or so the only limit is your imagination

This is my first ever widget, a wonky 4mm round mild steel scrap wire/bar about 14 inches long was turned into a "suspension arm" with the ends at 90 degrees to one another

                                            bender1.jpg

The wire is about the same strength as those hand grip exercise things

I also found more comments here

Final caveat, I used molegrips to tighten the clamp part, finger tightness is inadequate and the work slips

Just a final note on heavier work

I used the 90 degree mandrel and the smooth ratchet end with the roundbar grooves

Start by pinning the workpiece in the clamping section and getting the work snug and straight

Use the ratchet on the furthest practical point from the bending point possible and gently get the bend going, keep working on it until it starts bending

Put a little oil on the working face of the workpiece and gradually work the main face around the mandrel with the ratchet

The left hand job is 4x30mm B&Q flatbar which I will now use as a mini crowbar

The right hand job is B&Q square rolled steel, 6.67mm on the side and 10mm across the diagonal

I wouldn't use this unit for a production run… but it can do handy stuff
