The bride and I moved to France some years ago and having restored the various falling down buildings to provide a home and workshop, we’ve started to enjoy what seems to agree with us. In my case, this involves building a model railway, learning to play ukulele, speak better French, tinkering with old cars and having just acquired an Enco Compact Model 5 manual lathe, I need to learn how to use it.

Learning is fun and this forum seems a good resource to meet interesting people and learn.

Oh, I last used a lathe over 50 years ago at school. Happy days are comming again then!

      Cheers,

      Bill

Greetings amd merci mes amis Chris nd Noel.

I’m sure I will need advice along the way, but I’m following sage words from Quinn on Youtube and will practice some on the lathe when I collect it from my chum’s machine shop in Hampshire. Brian is also doing some essential mods and making me some tools. It’s just a hobby lathe, so not huge .  .  .  Emco Compact Model 5, manual.

            Be good, have fun,

            Bill

Hi There Longchap, Good to hear that another ME has popped up in this poorly ME represented country. If you search for “French model engineers” you will see a few other French residents.

Unfortunately (and I stand to be corrected) we seemed to have lost the link “French model engineers” when the software was changed but a search seems to show what the link contained.

Where abouts are you?  I am in the Lot dept 46 and have similar interests to you with an old car and a 5″ loco.

              Bob

                Hi Bob,

Thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out when I finish this tax return!

We’re in 49, Maine et Loire, in a little wine producing village near Saumur. I still have my first sports car, a ’65 TR4, which resides in the workshop with a 2CV and a’36 Austin 7. I’m finishing off a 4mm to the foot 2-4-0 GWR Metro Tank and will use the lathe for further loco builds, car bis and other intereting projects.

                Best,

                Bill

Welcome from yet another French resident. I’m down south in 66, Pyrenees Orientale.

I too have an interest in old cars but had to sell them to finance early retirement.  I started building a 5″ Simplex loco some years back but now find it too difficult to continue as it is too heavy for me now.

Good luck with your “Declaration des Impots” the online version is a b****r this year!

                  Regards

                  Russell

                    hello Bill,

You’ve revived memories of when I was an exchange student in the early 60’s. I was billeted with a family in Toulon whose father was a Captain in the French navy. I couldn’t understand a word of the parents’ French as they always spoke so fast, except for the father’s “Il faut pissez?”! I somehow knew what that meant.

The elder son had a Triumph TR4 and we drove from Toulon to Barcelona in it, then took a ferry to Majorca where the family had a yacht. We sailed round the island dropping anchor at night at various ports on the way.

I was totally smitten by the TR4 and bought one after uni for the princely sum of £400. It was stolen over 30 years ago. I still have the original steering wheel (removed to prevent anyone stealing the car!), log book, MOT certs.manual, spare parts book and lots of memories.

                    Hugh

Ny O level french is too many years behind me pour reponder bien!

                      But Welcome.

If you need to remind yourself about lathework, nthere vare lots of good books available, by folk like Stan Bray, Harold hall, L H Sparey, Neil Wyatt, Dave Fenner and David Clark.

None specifically about the Emco; but lots of users on here who will help.

But you never forget how to ride a bike and lathes are similar in that respect!

                      Howard
