I know what this is. Do you? The needle pulls out of through holes in the fingers.

        Hello John,

“from a cabinet maker”.  That does make inspired guesswork somewhat more difficult.

My best guess would be to hold something for assembly, rather than punch holes, as the pin looks a bit flimsy.

Go on, give us a clue.

          Hi,

It looks like a very basic flat leather drive belt lacing tool. The pin is the mandrel over which a strip of clips are bent when they are clamped into the belt using a bench vise.

Hi, I agree with Ivan, that’s it’s a basic belt lacing tool, I have a multi-size one, in which you can close all the lacings at the same time, on any width of belt up to the maximum width of the tool.

            Mastabar

You just load up the number of lacings needed for whatever width your belt is, and then just push the belt into the lacings, up to the block where the pin holds the lacings in.

Then swing the top down, and clout the striking section with a hammer, maybe a number of times, and the job is done.

Needles to say, I haven’t actually shown any belt, as I haven’t got any.

            Regards Nick.

My version of the Mastabar belt lacer is shown in this post; it used to be in an album on the old site

Yes it is for joining flat drive belts, using gut as the connecting medium. Workshop machines were thus powered.
