This may have nothing to do with cabinet work. There is a thickness taper to the end opposite the tang. The slots have increasing width approaching the tang. The clamp screw allows the position of the hook to be varied. Dismantled in two pictures to permit photography. What is it? (I don’t know)
I rather doubt the hook is anything to do with it. Potentially a different add-on could have set the depth of engagement of a tooth and the angle of bend but really these came from the time when it would have been a skill developed during the very long apprenticeship.
My father used a much more sophisticated one for panel saws, an Eclipse which could be adjusted for tooth pitch, it looked like pliers. Not much use today, saws seem to be disposable hard points.
Thank you . The curve on the back of the ‘hook’ seems to limit set across of each tooth, and the fact that the curve continues to a full hook form does appear to be art not function.
I still use my Eclipse version. I have one similar to the OPs image, but I have never really tried to master it. The stop does make it look easier to use.
