Not really sure of the correct term but after some what can only be described as a felt strip that is fitted onto my surface grinder to protect the vertical ways from grime – it approx 3/8’s of an inch square.

Anyone know where or who supplies such items.

        Afternoon Me

Try googling wool felt and order by size and thickness.

When I was working used to get felt sheets and strip from J.A Harrison, just had a look and they are still in business. They do a huge range of sizes and I believe still sell direct to the public.

The kind of felt that will suit is the stuff used in old cars for crankshaft and axle seals.

A vintage car supplier will sell it.

Standard wool felt used for craft purposes might not be dense enough for your needs.

For 3/8″ square, the seal for an old commerical vehicle might be big enough for you to cut a section from it, and maybe cheaper than a 150mm square from above.

                Google “felt bearing seal”.

                Sold by bearing supply companies.

Felt coasters are a handy source, if you can’t get any engineering felt.

                    Hi ME

I used Chiropody padding for one of my refurb jobs. You can buy this on ebay, and it comes in various thicknesses up to 10mm thick.  I have not seen this in any of our local chemists – hence suggesting ebay.

It is available in sheet form.  One downside, but it may be an upside for your application, it has adhesive on one side.  But maybe two 5mm pieces stuck back to back would work for your application.

                    Search for Hapla felt.

                    Best regards Alan

Doh! Why didn’t I think of that. Must have changed dozens of roller bearings in HVAC system air handler blowers and industrial conveyors etc in pillow blocks with felt strips for seals. Never thought of it when I was looking for felt for my Myford wipers.

Thanks for raising this topic. I will need quite a bit of felt for my grinder soon. If you have found a good source I would be interested to know it.

Another source is piano repair – they have a long strip to buffer the key presses. Also loads of little discs of different thicknesses if that fits some applications.

They look like they have what i need in sheet form which I can cut to size and not expensive either.
