Report in the Daily Telegraph saying that the recent Government restrictions on selling hexamine, seen as apossible ingredient of explosives, are causing problems for Mamod. A licence @ ~£40 is now needed for using the fuel. Pity, meths might be a sustitute but not so convenient.

If the government employed practical chemists rather than bureaucrats we would all do better ! Better give up on the barbacue, no charcoal, no more sugar in the tea, stop gardening, weedkiller and fertilizer, the list is endless. I recently bought 5L of meths at a local hardware store for the wilesco, where’s the problem there ? Noel.

Weedkiiler and fertiliser of types / concentrations usable as a explosive precursors are already requlated by the same legislation. Acetone and Sulphur are reportable.
Note the restrictions apply to anything you already have so if you have any hexamine, Sulphuric, Nitric Phosphoric Hydrofluric or Hydrochloric acid (over prescribed concentration), Mercury etc. you are committing an offence if you don’t have an EPP licence covering them.

          Robert.

              Hello.

I have not had the greatest experience with Hexamine fuel. It works until there is about a 1/4 of the fuel left. Then there develops a fine carbon film (this is well above the fuel!). This seems to stop decent heat transfer and the boiler doesn’t boil. Eventually the flame goes out leaving the remainder of the Hexamine fuel and the elevated carbon blanket.

I assume that the thin black blanket is carbon, but why it doesn’t burn, I know not. I have used differing samples of hex fuel in various Wilesco and Mamod models and the result is always the same. Does anyone else get this weird behaviour?

              Andrew.

Is the black material not soot but binder residue?

It could well be some form of binder. I assumed it was a carbon film, but as it does not burn, that seems doubtful. If it is carbon then it would seem to indicate a lack of oxygen.

I doubt I am the only person to have this problem. I may well try firelighter material as a fuel. If it works, then it would be a much cheaper alternative!

                  Andrew.
