You may have more luck with ground flat stock?

Hi Jason thanks Their price is ridiculous. Can get 3/4″ wide for much less but I then have to machine 1/4″ off the stock. Looks like I will need to get the milling machine reved up.

depends on the length you need. I’ve had some similar sized gauge plate from here.

As I said I need mild steel not gauge plate. The material need to be bent into some tight curves.

Have you tried your local steel stockholder? You will probably have to buy 3m but i will work out cheaper than buying a couple of feet from a ME type supplier and you will then have a lifetime’s supply.

Ground flat stock is supplied annealed and should be easily bent at that sort of thickness. I’ve certainly bent thicker GFS than that.

Local stockholders don’t seem to keep much in the way of small imperial section and even the ME trade don’t seem to have that size so no doubt hard to source hence they charge accordingly.

Does not help that a lot of the ME trade deal in short lengths and often don’t give much of a reduction if you buy longer lengths.

Pitty 2.5mm flat is not readily available as 3 x 12 may be a bit thick for your needs but again length plays a part, someone like Ringwood charges £5.10! for a 330mm length but at least they reduce to a more reasonable £9.18 for 3m supplied as 3 x 1m due to carriage constraints. You do need to order a few things to spread the flat rate carriage out

Imperial sizes may be hard to find, and pricey, if you can.

Flat bar in Metric dimensions may be easier to find.  Could you use metric.

If not, why not buy the nearest oversize Metric and mill to the required dimensions?

As Jason said if 2.5mm thickness was available that would be the most suitable equivalent. I purchased 12 feet of 3/32″ X 3/4″ for approx. £0.96 a foot. My project need 6 inch lengths of 3/23 x 1/2. Yesterday I made a jig to reduce the width of 10 lengths at a time on the milling machine. I will need a bucket to remove the swarf.
