Hi, I am looking fo opinions on bolting a metal piece   around a 90 degree corner tight. Would you angle 8mm bolts at 1-degree to achieve a tight clamping fit or not do that at all in metal(like in woodwork)-?

1-Piece nr-1 is a backplate 90 degrees that fit into two toolhoders on one toolpost, a very sturdy base I want to use for more than one purpose.

2-Piece nr-2: This is the round 105mm base for my MT4-Borig head inside a bush to it can be turned for ball cutting. I already made this all to fit with handle, great control of 180 degree movement.
Now I must secure this tight at the right height on centre to lathe spindle. To achieve this I milled a big square out of the round base material, this now match the 90 degree corner of the back plate. I want to use 4x 8mm bolts from the top, & 4x 8mm bolts from the inside below on the backplate and angle those at 1-degree to pull it in secure to backplate every time its fitted.

Note:The 105mm round piece is bulky, because I dont have a 4-Jaw chuck to clamp a smaller square, so a lot of it will be milled off eventually after I decided on the final shape of it.

Hi Chris an Idea sounds great but a drawing or sketch of what you are doing may help, at least which lathe you are fitting it to and a photo may also help.

You need to fix a squared block tightly into the angle of an ‘L’ with best accuracy that can be achieved?

Will these parts only need to be mounted with ‘best accuracy’ once, or will it need to retain accuracy through repeated mounting / demounting.?

(For best fit I’d make it permanent)

Four 8mm bolts along each side sounds like overkill – what is the bolt spacing?

If it is to be repeatedly re-mounted, then I would look carefully at kinematic principles … [more guff available from me if the answer is yes]

I want it to be remounted, because I may use the backple-to-Toolpost for something else as well. It feels very sturdy using two toolholder from one toolpost and bottom rest on crossslide, more to be done here(slip Adjutment added) if above is succesfull.

Here is a rough scetch from the side between lathe chuck & toolpost on crosslide.

I’m not confident that I have completely understood your problem but here goes. As part of a project I needed to bolt a block to a main body in an accurately repeatable way and this was done by bolting round a 90 degree corner. Holes were clearance and the only precaution required was to tighten the screws progressively to make sure that both surfaces were in contact. Tappings for bolts perpendicular to surfaces as normal.
