l am currently working on LBSC,s Pansy design and l seem to recall hearing/reading about a problem with the valve gear, and wonder if anyone can enlighten me??,looking at the drawings of the cylinder block,l cant actually work out how the slide valves maintain contact with the port face, unless they are held there by steam pressure,no doubt l am missing something that is staring me in the face, but l really cant believe that that is all thats keeping the valves in contact????

If you search on pansy valve you’ll find masses of earlier posts going back years. Answer should be in there somewhere

Maybe worth asking on Model Engineering Clearing House forum too as there is an active builder on there, (from memory) at least one owner, and also one of the ‘regulars’ is very knowledgeable about loco’ valve-gear in general and has an improved valve-gear design for ‘Pansy’.

          Regards,

Yes the slide valves are held to the port face by steam pressure, the valve has to have a little bit of free movement between the valve and it’s drive buckle to allow the valve to seat to the valve face.

Michael has it ! To lower the pressure and friction on the slide valve a balanced slide valve may be used. Do leave a bit of slack round the valve and buckle to avoid the valve being lifted off the face. Noel.

Hi noel, pardon me for being a bit dim,but what is meant by “a balanced slide valve”???,l understand the need for a little bit of “play”between the valve and buckle, but am unsure as to what a balanced slide valve is,thanks, jack.

Jack, I would stick with the designed Pansy slide valves, don’t complicate things with balanced slide valvesLink

Thanks for the link Michael – I had only mentioned it on an information only basis not intending that Jack should try it, but the drawings are interesting. Noel.
