      Evening all,

Can anyone recommend a UK source for getting some things (1s or 2s of stuff) cast in Iron?

I can hack them out of block, but I’m hoping a casting will be a bit cheaper as well as being nearer the shape I want to start with

      cheers

      Dave

These people have been doing the castings from my recent patterns, they will do one offs.

          That’s useful to know, Jason

… no immediate need for them, but duly bookmarked.

I had made patterns for designs that are not commercially available and then approached a local foundry to ask if they would be willing to cast them for me. After denying that they would do this type of work, I assume, the foreman of the casting shop then said he would slip them in with a batch of other castings as and when the opportunity arose. The firm did this work for me at what I considered to be a very reasonable price but I was told not to ‘advertise’ the fact as they really didn’t want this type of small work. Actually, I can’t understand this as I am certain doing such work for our fraternity on a regular basis could be a very useful income stream, but they know their own business better than I do.

I appreciate that local foundries must be very few and far between these days and only in certain areas of the country if they still exist, but it may still be worthwhile looking around. And no, I am not prepared to name the firm that was good enough to do the casting for me.

Bridport Foundry, who make the Stuart-Turner castings, is another candidate.

JTE castings in Wigan were very good when I wanted some wheels for a 5″g loco. Friend of mine used them for bits for a full size loco. There’s also a foundry in Altrincham, but never used them. Goggle will provide an address

I and Rob Gough have had many small and single batches of castings done at Sutton castings mainly for the Drummond lathes and atachments.  https://www.suttoncastings.co.uk/   In  cast Iron, Brass and bronze.

Talk to Chris Purshouse at Purbright Castings Ltd. in Willenhall.  tel 01902 603898.

I have had several castings done by them and they have also done castings for Graham Corry at Alyn Foundry.

Depending on what your making you may find getting castings done NOT cheap. BEFORE you make the patterns speak to your foundry for advice on making them. The surface finish is vital for good castings, a poor finish may make the patterns useless. Good Luck, Noel.
