I’ve been given a load of the nuts shown, they are 5/16 UNF yellow passivated steel and appear to have a locking feature, I was wondering what their application would be? I’m sure someone has come across them and can advise…

Certainly it’s intended as a low profile locking nut.
Try “binx nut” as a search term

Hi Henry, yes, exactly what peak 4 says, he just beat me to it. Have used them in the distance past, and the work very well. May even have a few myself somewhere.

In my youth a very similar method of thread locking was called aerostiff nuts. Noel

I know Aerotight, which have the cut on the outside (Links to a pdf download.)

There’s some useful info on Wiki, but probably needs updating/clarifying
