      Can anyone please help with a supply of bright, 5mm x 4  3/8″ or110mm x 12  1/2″ or 350mm?

Probably nearest larger stock size I guess would be 125mm wide x maybe 500mm long.     Depending upon supplier – I have in the past bought heavy section charged by the inch from Maccmodels. Just can’t seem to find 5mm x 110mm +

      TIA

      John

5 x 100 seems the be where it stops, if you could come down to 3/16″ then that is available 6″ wide and M-machine will cut to length

Other option is 5mm sheet but not quite so nice to work with

A local steel stock holder may well cut this from an off cut for a few beer tokens or even give it to you to cut yourself. I take it you only need a short bit ? Good Luck Noel.

Anyone prepared to name a stock-holder who slices off-cuts for a few beer tokens?   Or a friendly scrappie?  They existed 50 years ago, but maybe favours were only possible due to old-fashioned methods: poor supervision, weak accounting methods, bad staff-relations, and cluttered premises with dark corners!

My local scrapyards are all razor wire and angry dogs: they buy metal but won’t sell it to the public, and they certainly don’t allow visitors into the yard.    My nearest metal sellers are all modern businesses, neatly laid out and organised so it would be difficult for staff to do anyone a favour!   They sell off-cuts and charge for cutting but it’s part of the business and everything goes through their computer.

All those wonderful junk-shops and government surplus outlets have long gone too.

Am I just unlucky here, or do beer-tokens still work elsewhere? Maybe there’s a masonic handshake…

It’s a long way for you to consider travelling, Dave … but John Swindells in Macclesfield is a very decent Buy and Sell scrap metal dealer.

I haven’t visited K-steels in Huddersfield for at least 15 years now, but they were always very helpful for off cuts and noggins from the scrap skip. It was always through the books and paid for. I have never been a fan of purchasing a few inches here and there, better to buy a full length from a steel stockholder for about the same price and have nearly a lifetime supply in stock. You can cut it into 2ft lengths if it makes you feel better.

Hey Dave, I’m not a mason and you must be unlucky !  The stock holders I use in Kings Lynn have a scrap skip and as they have the laser cutters running round the the clock there can be interesting offcuts. Such funds go in the tea box. Noel.

                      Hi all,

Thank you all for your replies.

Obviously, Chris was not aware of my age when he made the comment about a lifetimes supply, but there are 2 snags – a) I’m pushing 80 so not much time left to butcher a whole stock length, being my current want for5mm x 4  3/8″” wide.                                                               b)  when I referred to maccmodels charging by the inch length for heavy sections, which I think is a good idea, especially when postage virtually doubles the cost. I was thinking of the time when Joe @ maccmodels supplied me with several inches of 2″ square steel bar. Don’t think I could lift a stock length of it off the deck!  Thanks anyway, Chris.

Rod, thank you for your suggestion. Will try metals4u. Have dealt with them b4 but name slipped mind.

I live in a dump of a place, Brighton, for decent tools, materials etc. OK if young and possess brain cells with 2 Unis close by! A few decades ago, was a town with umpteen engineering companies in the area and a matching number of decent toolshops and material suppliers. Even the screwdriver joints are diminishing.

Either hang on, delaying project progress and go to an exhibition with a shopping list or take shopping list an drive via a supplier North of Watford gap going on holiday. Wannit now? Suffer cost of postage!

                      Regards

                      John

                        Hi All,

Many thanks for all of your replies. Not ignoring any of you, just thought I’d leave it for a while to see what turns up. Thank you all again for your suggestions.
