      Hi All,

I’m thinking about a new project. I have seen a full set of casting and a boiler kit for a 11/2″ scale Allchin traction engine for sale. It’s partially part build. No plans or build book are included. Approx £1300. I have no knowledge of this Reeves kit. Is £1300 a reasonable price. What time scale would you be looking at to build a kit of this size. I’m retired with full w/shop facilities.

As I have said before on another recent post. You either want the item or you don’t. If you do, it’s worth the money and if you don’t the price is unacceptable. Auctions, either ‘real’ or online, prove this point to me. Just watch ‘Bangers and Cash’ to see what I mean. I have entered auctions determined to outbid everyone else simply because I wanted the item. Obviously, there is a personal limit as to how far you can go if someone else is similarly determined but that’s the risk you take when you get into one of these dogfights.

Again, as regards how long any project takes is entirely down to the person concerned, their enthusiasm and determination to get the job done. I have projects that have drifted on for years whilst others have done exactly the same sort of work in a matter days/weeks/months. That is their choice as it is mine to do a bit here and there as and when I feel like it.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that no one can decide how much another person wants to spend or how fast they should work, it’s all down to our individual selves!

As there are some suppliers of castings and boiler kits you should be able to get an idea of the cost of a set. Then decide whether the work already done increases or decreases the value depending on the workmanship. All builders are of course ‘toolmakers with 50 years experience’. Allow for a few bits missing perhaps.

In the model boat world a kit is worth more than a finished boat because for a high proportion of the hobbyists it is the building that is the fun not the running of it afterwards.

As Baxyle says it is easy enough to price up by looking at Reeves website. Compere cast of the items you will be getting for £1300 with what they would cost from Reeves.

Beware any boiler if one is included as unless it is complete and certified then best treated at scrap value

You then need to toss up as to whether what has been done so far is of a usable standard or make an allowance if some of the castings and parts will need to be bought and started again.

Time could be 1500-2000hours depending on your ability so work out how much time you will spend a week on the model and that will tell you how many months or years it will take.

P1030245The Allchin is a lovely model, by the same token there is quite a lot of detailed work in it which is not to be under-estimated. If that’s what you want then the price that you quote doesn’t seem too bad as it includes the boiler kit. I’d be a bit wary if buying another’s part finished project though, check the quality and extent but you may well be satisfied of course.

I used the drawings, which are virtually error free, I also had the Hughes 2nd write-up, (in ME c1976 IIRC). which is very comprehensive and very helpful, later published as the book and just might be sufficient to manage without the drawings but I wouldn’t really recommend that.

Don’t forget that you also need the gears, spurs and bevels, at around £500 if purchased from Reeves

As for timescale, I made mine many years ago with a fairly basic workshop, I might have logged about 2K hours, that was before time-savers like ready-cut wheel spokes etc. Painting and lining takes a while.

Can’t resist trying a photo in the new forum.
