Does anyone know the lubrication scheme for the Ackworthie Reversing Tapping Head#0 model?

It has an oil port (oil daily), but only signs of dried grease inside around the gears. The clutch ring is good as in no scoring.

Oiling the input plain bearing has dropped oil onto the clutch and causing it to slip with a spiral flute tap.

I have a 6 page pdf of instructions for models HR 1 & 2, but not sure how to attach it here, or even whether they are applicable to your model.
Feel free to PM me with a real email address and I’ll pass them on.

I think I have the same head as you, but I’m not in the workshop at the mo, and wont be for an hour or two

          Many thanks Bill,

          PM sent

They sound a little different as there’s no ball bearing nor grease nipple and mines rated from 12BA to 1/4 whit. Not sure how it can drive a 1/4whit and not break a 12BA.

I’ve just realised that the instructions I have for the HR 1 & 2 are actually for a Taco head; It’s just that I had them stored in my Ackworthie folder.
I’ll still send you a copy, though it looks like they are a different gizmo altogether.
I bought mine for a tenner, as it came without collets.
Maybe now is the time to try inserting a youtube video 🙂
Not really a repair, but does show a bit of detail.

In also have now picked up a benchtop Herke Tapping machine which recons to do 9BA upwards, so not used the Ackworthie of late

p.s. no PM received yet, as of 14.47

That video is my version too, but he skates over lubrication and then goes on to make the collets wrong, not surprising when he didn’t have any to copy.

I bought a SPV tapping head at an auction some years ago , it was not very good & slipped badly + no collets. I did a full youtube video on stripping & repairing it. I also 1st made some collets from delrin which were not very good. I then made some from alloy & split them for better grip. It works quite good now. Since then I was given a nearly new Tapmatic with all the rubber collets which is superb.

                Steve.
