      Hi Guys,

I have been recommended to post on this forum to find out which collet i need for the milling machine i recently purchased. I have been advised by Cutwel to give you guys an ask.

Okay so here goes: I have recently purchased a Herbert No10s Vertical Mill. It did not come with any tools. I am trying to purchase a the correct collet. I was wondering if any of you have come across this model and would know which collet type i would need.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated I have searched through the Internet and this forum but i can't seem to find anything.

      Thank you in advance.

      Matthew

I think they had their own specific taper so you may be better off making your own ER collet holder to fit the taper rather than making several collets or trying to find suitable tooling.

The Herbert taper is similair to the 30INT but you are going to have to machine them yourself or pay a fortune. Once set up it is not a problem just be prepared to make a few whilst you are at it.

You might find somethig in the history of Herbert's: **LINK**

You could also try Tony at lathes.co.uk for information on the machine ?

I bought it… wish I hadn't, it's a kinda social history book with very little good stuff on Herberts and contains not a single picture or illustration

Tonys is your best bet, and look out for stuff on ebay

once a week, say tuesday night, search for herberty stuff, tech manuals etc

                    Hi Jo,

Can I use a 30int chuck or do i need to do some alterations to it to make it work?

                      Hi Mike,

I spoke to Tony yesterday and unfortunately he does not have a manual for the Mill, however he has been able to find two pages in a catalogue that make reference to the Herbet No10s.

I have a 0V, it too had a proprietary taper with just 6 imperial collets so I sent the spindle to John S and he re-worked it to take R8 collets. Now I have no problem finding tooling.

I was informed by the Machine Tool workshop where I bought the machine the spindle taper was an R0, similar style to R8 but smaller diameter on all dimensions, my machine came with a Clarkson collet chuck fitted to a suitable taper.

Herbert 0V is a great vertical milling machine, very heavily built with excellent quill on a massive spindle. Plenty of height table to spindle to accommodate rotary table + part for machining.
