I have some new bright mild steel sheet (3mm) in order to build some engine frames for my new project – Gresley N2 Tank.

Should I anneal these sheets before starting the cutting/filing?

If you are not required to cut into the thickness of the sheet then you shouldn’t have a problem. Hacksawing out the slots for the axles will result in the sheet ‘bending’ into a slight curve. This is corrected by the usual method of resting the ends on blocks and applying ‘suasion’ by means of a hammer. However if the sheet has been sheared to size you may have a twist. I leave to others to advise how to get it out.

Hi Steve, unless you are able raise the temperature uniformally, and keeping it supported over the whole area of the sheet from cold, you will get warping and distortion. You would probaly be better of using it as is.

Thanks for the prompt response.

Yes, it was the tendancy to warp following cutting out of axle slots that I had been warned about. But your reference to ‘suasion’ makes perfect sense to me, especially as I have no means of consistent heating.
