A recent letter in either ME or MEW – I forget which – recommended a lightweight hydraulic oil for general lubrication of machines in the workshop.

The oils suggested were Shell Tellus R37, BP HLP 32 and Mobile DTE.

Does anyone know where one can buy such oils in small quantities, like 1 or 5 litres at a time?  The only quantities I have seen on the internet are for 20 litre drums at around 50 GBP a time – more money than I want to spend for far more oil than I need.

        Is there a reasonable solution?

Castrol Hyspin AWS 32 is another oil with essentially the same characteristics and viscosity.  RS components sell it mail order in 5 litre bottles at an acceptable price.  I use Hyspin for the purposes mentioned  along with Castrol Magna BD68 which is a good slide-way, gear and heavy bearing oil which RS also sell.  Both are good oil can oils.  BD68 is excellent on hinges where it hangs on for ages, well worth the extra trouble of working it in.

One variety of  Hydraulic oil can be bought from your local car accessory store, just look for something that says “car jack oil” or similar. Might not be what you want but might be worth a look, if you only want to buy a litre bottle.

This has also been covered before in this post

Thanks for the replies – sorry for the delay, have been away.

Have completely forgotten about RS components, that is noted now!

Plan to go to the Warco open days so may get a can of head oil there.

Automatic transmission oil does the same job as most of the hydraulic oils and it’s usually available in smaller quantities from motor stores.

                      Have you looked in Halfords?
Our big local store seems to stock specialist oils, but in the tools area rather than main (engine) oils section.

Buck and Hickman list & stock Hyspin 32 and Magna BD 68.  They sold me 5 Ltrs of Hyspin 32 for £13 (£12 something),  which was the same that their catalogue price without VAT.  If you have branch nearby, it’s worth going in and asking.

                          I have seen the following recommended as a slideway oil concoction;

1 part STP or Wynn`s oil treatment (its very sticky to stay put.)
1 part Molybdenum DiSulphide, a graphite oil, tradename, Molyslip. This was recommended to fill any minute spaces with balls of graphite to lubricate.
                               20 (?) parts EP90, Extreme Pressure oil

Shake vigourously every time b4 use.

I use it on Myford bed  and graphite grease on leadscrews, Lathe & Mill. I use Myfords oil for the  bearings on MLS-7, Mill and Fobco Drill. I keep Myford oil in a Rheilang pump can for two reasons; it doesnt waste oil like other makes of pump cans so is economical with expensive oil and as it doesnt spill everywhere, I dont get oiled as well!

I don’t know where you live, but I’ll repeat; tractor and farm shops sell all sorts of oils ,including, of course, hydraulic oil, and are usually much cheaper than other outlets. I use universal tractor oil, for almost everything, some kind farmer ( there’s an oxymoron) gave me about 10 galls. This was used for everything on the machine, engine, g/box, brakes,etc.. If its good enough for a £100,000 m/c it’s good enough for me

Don’t know where you are situated, but Hallett oils in Wolverhampton (01902 745800) are very helpful. (no connection except as satisfied customer)

I recommend. Smith & Allen of Darlington. Very helpful and sell in 5l cans

I use a hydraulic oil with high pressure additives on my Alexander mill. Works fine!

As mentioned, tractor and farm places.

Boat and shipping places also carry a lot of oil types and a case of decent beer could get you a 5-10 litre canful from an engineer.

It’s like with scrounging scrap from engineering places.(who might have oils too btw)

All you have to do is ask nicely…and hope you get a sympathetic ear.
