Forgive me if this question has been asked (and answered) on this forum before – a search revealed no result.
I am in the process of making a simple rotary table for my new mill.  Originally I hadn’t intended to make it with a worm and wheel drive, but have changed my mind.  I have spent many fruitless hours searching the web for a source for the said worm and wormwheel, all to no avail.  Does anybody out there know where I can obtain a pair, preferably in the UK and at reasonable cost, bearing in mind that I live in France and some suppliers won’t post here?
      Thanks in advance.

          Hello John.

The last one, I think, has distribution in France.
          Good luck

Thanks Dias, I’ll give them a try.

Another one you could try is GMB Assoc I’ve used them when Boston gear parts are spec’d on American model designs. HPC as mentioned above are very good as well.

                Hi John

College Engineering (http://www.collegeengineering.co.uk) list casting sets for 6 inch and 4 inch rotary tables. For the 4 inch certainly they list the worm and wheel as being available separately at about £15 +vat for the pair. Doesn’t show those for the 6 inch but a phone call or e-mail should provide the answer.

I realise you’re looking for something more local John but you could at least checkout  Stock Drive Products in the US at:

They have a vast range of both imperial and metric components and  while they used to be mainly commercial/industrial, they are handling small orders (online, billed to a CC)  from individuals these days. They use regular mail now and ship outside the US.

Get them to send a copy of their interactive CD while you’re at it.

Many thanks to all those who have taken the trouble to reply to my message.  I will follow all the leads and hopefully find what I’m looking for.

                      Hi John,

I have made worm wheels by free hobbing, using acutter made from silver steel just slightly bigger than the worm. Just minimal relief applied with a file.

The work well, but two caveats – gash the blank first to ensure you get the correct number of teeth (I have a 61-tooth gear as a reminder). Secondly, get some engraving brass – the first, expensive sheet of 1/4″ brass I bought produced awful results but the engraving brass worked perfect first time.

I have made plenty of gear wheels using the resulting worm wheels and all have been OK, so I’m happy with the result.

                      Neil

Thanks, everyone.  I have ordered a pair today from College Engineering to be delivered to my daughter in the UK, hopefully in time for her to bring them over in August!

                        Regards,
                        John
