I have recently acquired an old Grayson lathe built, Tony of The Lathe web site tells me, in the 1930’s.

I bought this as an inexpensive introduction to turning and as the machine was being used until quite recently I am hoping with a little work I can remove some metal.

It has not been possible to obtain a manual or parts list. I have taken off all the slides and cleaned and greased them and generally had a tidy up.

I understand there were articles written in ME in the 1950’s by Martin Cleeve about restoring similar lathes. Would any forum member know of these articles please to assist me.

      I would welcome any help.

      Thanks,

          Hi Jeff,

You could consult the on-line ME index here. My local library has bound copies of ME going back to about the second World War.  You may be able to find such a resource locally.  Try searching your local libraries on the internet, most have an online search facility these days.  or is that too obvious a thing to say, if so I’m sorry.

          Regards

          Terry

            Hi Terry.

            Many thanks for your reply.

I have been on the site and found several references to Grayson Lathes.

This gives me the volume, issue and page. Is it a question now of locationg a copy of the magazine?

            Regards,

              Hi Jeff,

Let me know the details of the articles and I’ll see what I can do.  Failing that, in the past my local library has been able to get me copies of articles from the British Library Magazine and Journal Archive at Boston (Lincs).  They have copies of every Important magazine published in the UK.

The copies cost me about £3.00 each.

                Hi Jeff,

This may be of use, you can email them, the address is on the site somewhere, home page, I think.

                  Sorry Jeff,

I forgot to add the link to the British Library search results for Model Engineer in my last post,

                    Wow Terry

I never knew about the ME search facility. I have now got some articles about my Barker lathe to locate. Up until now information has been non-existent apart from finding one other owner of these

I’ll see if my local library can help me

                        Terry,
I am not sure if you are referring to Leeds library, but if not then they have bound copies of ME covering the same time period.

                          Go to this site.

Tony Griffiths seems to know everything about lathes.  This address is for his machine tool listings, just click on Grayson and you get stuff.

Should’a said this in the last post.

I use a Randa Model A long bed, which was also sold as a 3″ Grayson.  For a lathe which cost a little over six quid eighty odd years ago, it can still turn out accurate parts.

Not sure if it’s the same as yours.

                              Hi Dave,

No, not Leeds, but my local library is in Rugby, it seems that many larger libraries will have these.  An excellent resource perhaps many of us overlook.  Maybe we should do a survey amongst the members of the forum  who could check their own areas?

I think that would be an excellent resource if we could list the volumes available.

                              By the way Ian,

Jeff mentions that he spoke to Tony in his original post.

My school reports always said “Ian does not concentrate.”   I guess I didn’t get any better over the past fifty years.
