Given the fact we keep being reminded about copyright, what are MHSs views on plagerism??

Don’t know if that’s the right spelling cos on this forum, there’s no spull chuck and BEFORE anyone directs me to use Word/Waft or whatever to compose my bits, I want to use THIS forums box to do it so we don’t overstep the boundaries. Column width that is, not code of conduct.

I raise the question due to a series being published in the M/E and would like the “Managements” views.

Strange …. when I post, I get spell-checked as I go along.

Of course it uses an American dictionary which is even stranger … (or perhaps that’s what you mean by no spell check )

Perhaps you’re using Firefox which includes a spell checker. If that’s the case, you want to go to Tool/Addons and install the British English dictionary and get rid of the default US one.

would this be a series which appears to be based on a thread posted on another forum recently regarding an engine rebuild? If so I was thinking it looked familiar too

Thats the post I was thinking off, couldnt remember if it was mad modder or hmem it was on though. iirc john rebuilt that engine as a paying job and documented it on the thread with the owners permission. Maybe part of deal was that owner got to publish the words and pics? although it was shortly after that thread that bogs started watermarking his pics I think.

Hi Guys,

As a great fan of Bogs’ work and write-ups, I hope this “slur” on his activities is sorted quickly.

While on the subject, perhaps his fan club could start a petition to persuade him to write a book detailing his ways of working. I for one would buy a copy.

As far as I know the article is genuine.

I knew it was taken from the posts but believe the original author is aware of it being published. As far as I know, nothing wrong has been done or I would not have published it.

I was directed here by a model engineering friend, and I hope to
clear up this matter once and for all, but also add something.

I
was fully aware of the article well before it was published because the
author of it had already asked for my permission to use my text and
pictures in the Model Engineer magazine.

As a
lot of you know, all I am interested in nowadays is helping people to
get started on the road to making things with their own hands, and if my
postings can be used for that effect, that is all the reward I expect.

If
the article did generate a sum of money, then I would expect the
article writer to submit it to a charity of his choice. That is his
personal choice, not mine, I want no part of it, even though most of the
text and pictures are of my making.

I don’t
know why I have a following, maybe it is because I try to explain even
the simple things in laymans terms, rather than trying to baffle people
with bullsh and one upmanship, which happens much too often nowadays,
not just on websites, but in magazines as well, hence I subscribe to no
magazines any more, and soon drop and leave websites when the holier
than thou posters start to get their fingers in the pie.

But
anyway enough of that, back to the matter in hand.

There
is one thing that isn’t related to the article, but still relating to
the engine I did a top end refurbishment on.

It
seems like the the article submitter is trying to sell a model boat with
this engine in it. Maybe using this article and my words to assist in
the sale. I gave no permission for that to be done, and I am actually
very dismayed with his actions, especially seeing he has been pestering
me for more than a year to finish off the refurbish, by doing the bottom
end of the engine as well, as the engine certainly now needs it.

Unfortunately,
as a lot of my fellow modellers know, this last year has been a very
trying time for my family and myself , and only recently have I been
able to get back into the shop, and I was looking forwards to asking him
to return the engine for the needed refurb, and get it back into top
class condition.

But after seeing it for sale on ebay, I
want nothing more to do with it.

So I hope
that this explanation puts things to rights.

Seems a rather unfortunate turn of events to me.

If it’s the article I’m think of I was slightly perplexed reading it as it seemed to switch between the first and third person .

Hi David,

Even if the original author gave consent, the article author should not give the impression that it was all his own work, this I find to be underhand and beneath the accepted standard of one of the world most respected model engineering magazines.

Just on another note, it is moderation like this that makes me leave sites as well.

There is only one thing worse than ‘holier than thou’s’, and that is bad and overbearing moderation. If that is what it is like here, I don’t think you would like my candid views of certain types of people that I have already mentioned.

It looks like it is a good job I only called in to put things straight.

Hi Bogs,

It is because of your straight forward views and great knowledge and experience that I feel you should write more and in a form that is not deleted at the whim of the “powers that be” or a computer crash.

If your recent sad loss has taught us anything, it is that if you don’t pass on all that you have learnt in your lifetime, there comes a time when it is too late. Please think about writing a book.

Firstly, in no way was I inferring that the editor of M/E was aware of the true background to the submitted artical but more importantly and without “Blabbing”, I was aware of the personal demenour of the guy who resurected the engine at the time. Not blowing smoke up Boggies Posterior (Too big anyway) but in similar circumstances, many would have not even started the job.

Surfice to say, I hope Judas enjoys his “Winnings” and his “Trophy” attains the £1600 buy it now price he’s put it on the “Flee” for.

Hopefully the “Newbies” will accept this as not the norm of true model engineering spirit and sorry I had to bring this up as I know darned well the true author wouldn’t have.

Hi There

I have no idea what you see as a problem.

Roy is selling a boat on Ebay, so what.

I received the following from Roy before publication.

The engineeer who did the refurb is John Moore, John is not in the best of health at the present, and his wife is very ill but he is quite happy for you to use for your publication,

I also received John’s email address.

Roy said he would sort payment out with John.

   This being the case, are all articals described in M/E subject to non authentication?? If so, be prepared to receive a “Few” with similar non aknowledged origins.

Whats the going rate per page now??
