Trying to locate a good publication on turning and use of the lathe. I managed to borrow EITB H2 & H23 Turning Instruction manuals but I have to return them. They are just what I need and I thought I would be able to buy them from Ebay or Amazon but no luck. My only option is to copy each page but a bit of a marathon!

Can anyone recommend something similar or even advise me where to find these publications.

Help would be appreciated.

You can’t go far wrong with the old classic “The Amateur’s Lathe” by L.H. Sparey

Another book you might consider is ‘How to Run a Lathe’ originally by South Bend Lathes. It originally dates back to 1942 and although it is written around their products it has a lot of information that is as good today as it was then. It has been republished by Lindsey Books and at about £6.75 it is good value IMO.

Add to the Southbend book, ‘How to Cut Screw Threads in the Lathe'(Bulletin no 36A published 1938), its only 20 pages, but like ‘How to Run a Lathe’ an excellent little book. There are a number of other South Bend Books,ie., No. 38 ‘How to Grind Lathe Tool Cutter Bits’.
Another one I got soon after I got my lathe was Stan Bray’s ‘Introducing the Lathe’.Ian S C

As a recent entrant into this fascinating hobby (I’m not into models but the engineering bit using lathes and mills) I was faced with where to start

I have bought many books and would recommend the following (some of which are also recommended by others above)

The Amateur’s Lathe by L H Sparey (an excellent overview)

Lathework a Complete Course by Harold Hall (Workshop Practice no.34 I think)

The Model Engineers Workshop Manual by Geo Thomas (more info than a Tibetan monk could digest in a lifetime on a mountain top, absolutely amazing book and thanks for the folks on here who recommended it)

Thanks all,

I have plenty to go at now, so will head down to my vintage bookshop and also the library. Check out the titles and then buy what I think suits my knowledge.
