What are the standard tolerances for the distance between rails for 5 inch track ?

Wow, that is technical, and not sure I understand it. It states 5″ as the minimum width between rails, and increasing on bends. I could not read into that what the maximum could be, for straight or curves.

I did not spot a max figure for gauge widening on their site. My interest is 7 1/4″ and in the society standards they give a max widening of +1/8″, so somewhere around + 1/16″ should be OK for 5″.

5″ gauge maximum 5.09″ (or 129.3mm).

Doug Hewson gave similar limits (his max + 3/32 inch) in earlier articles, and gave the 5″ gauge widening for multi-gauge trackwork as 5 1/16 inch through the pointwork.

So in engineering terms 5 inch gauge is 5″ +0.090, -0.000 for straight and bends, opening to the high limit on bend sections, however through points it should be 5″ +0.063, -0.000.
