I have a set of carbide tip (brazed in place, not replaceable inserts) lathe turning tools. These are the ones for the run-of-the-mill mini-lathe. Searching the web I have found various sets: 5,6 and 11 pieces.
The package identifies them with a DIN: for example, 4972R, 4972L, 4975. While the “L” and “R” designations might seem obvious (I hope!) do these designations have, in fact, any real meaning: that is, left-turning tool, threading tool, facing tool or parting/cutoff tool?
Does having a DIN assigned impart any guarantee of quality?
Is there a source for the codings online? I found one mention (no url) that a German site offered information for a price (no idea of how much).
