Hi Chaps I thought you would like to see this video we took at the 2016 Little Locomotive Efficiency Competition (Little LEC) that was held at my Club the South Cheshire Model Engineering Society last month

A big thanks to Lawrence and Dan for compiling it.

      Enjoy Stew

Very interesting, seeing as I have been to Driffield steam rally today, well it is my home town so it would be rude not to.saw some amazing steam cars, one of which (the Doble, ex Howard Hughes) was reputedly clocked at 133mph by the texas highway patrol in 1926! very impressive acceleration even as the drove round the arena. If only steam engine development had continued, who knows where we would be today!

Stew – thank you for posting this video.

Really nice to see these little locomotives running around, most pulling more than the driver.

Looked like it was a lot of fun!

                Neil

Neil:- I have got a graph of the gradients but can't figure out how to post it so I'll email you them:-

We have two tracks an inner 1/10 mile track for 2 1/2" 3 1/2" and 5" its steepest gradient lifts it 140mm over 30 M

The longer 1/4 mile track is for 3 1/2" and 5" its steepest gradient lifts it 240mm over 100 M.

We have the chance of taking on more land so we are debating about building a 7 1/4" ground level track as well

We're holding our annual GALA on 10th Sept your not far away so why not bring your deziel over for a run.

Thanks for you interest in the video it was a fun event to hold and we got to meet some real nice people.

                Cheers

                Stew

                      Thanks Stew,

I make the smaller track about 1 in 214 and the bigger track just 1 in 416.

I'm no expert but having seen a few tracks I thought the wee engines were pulling quite hefty loads pretty fast, which suggested a track with modest gradients. I think Derby have 1 in 80 which feels like going up stairs!

The fastest 3 1/2 clocked an average speed of just over 6 MPH whilst the fastest 2 1/2" was achieved by William Powell with his Ayesha at just over 5 MPH, the competitors commented about what a good track it was to drive on. I've been clocked with our dynometer truck at 9 MPH over the fastest stretch with my Simpex and I averaged 6 1/2" MPH over 30 min with a four adults on the back. The biggest load I've pulled was 9 Mothers at a Birthday party some of them were hefty ladies and they were squeezed in like sardines on the trucks.

                        Yes John

Its nice to see 2 1/2" running we have an annual gathering by the 2 1/2" gauge society and I always try to go and see them running.
