Is this a way to get more ‘lone hand’ models into the exhibitions?

I'm hoping to get to the next ME exhibition and would like to put a couple of models or tools in on loan or even competition…

I don't fancy doing the double trip though.

My wife suggested "why don't you team up with someone else, one of you dropping off models and the other picking up?"

I can see that this implies quite a level of trust, and also for larger models or those requiring special packing or rigging there may be some reluctance to handle other people's work.

Without making any commitments, can I suggest we use this forum to at discuss some sort of 'buddying' of this kind. If a way of arranging it while reducing any risks to acceptable levels can be found, it could help get more models to and from the exhibition from more remote areas?

Good idea Neil , it is certainly off putting when you have to make two trips or stay over to show your work. Another alternative might be for the organisers to offer a collection/delivery service but I can imagine the logistics of this would be difficult.

With a buddy system a meeting point might be useful so that several items could go together without to much hassle.

              Anymore ideas chaps?

Bear in mind all the people who get conned by thieves at front door or internet eg “phishing”, ask yourself how well do I know this person who is about to remove my ?X000 – worth model having taken me 8 years to make? May I suggest photo of him/her + several of exhibit and signed receipt from them which also states reason. Description and reg no. vehicle and see passport and take no. THINK SECURITY!!

Security is of course an obvious requirement and it has to work both ways in the modern world we inhabit. You might find yourself quite innocently taking a stolen model along for exhibition. Then there is the thorny problem of insurance to be considered

I think the idea is a good one which could only work properly, to start with at least, between a group of individuals who know and trust each other implicitly. Each could act as 'collectives' locally to the various sites of demonstration.

It would expand as necessary by organic growth as the old timers fade away. This forum may be too open for it to flourish satisfactorily and safeguards to protect the participants from each other might become unwieldy.

For what it's worth, those are my views.

In days of yore, the publishers used to arrange an insured van that went round the motorway network picking up pre-booked models at a number of strategically convenient services. I think Ted Jolliffe and a mate used to drive it.

Obviously it's not as simple as just hiring a van, there's a lot of organisation to be done. Tubal Cain wrote a long article on how to pack your model (his were in custom wooden crates with lengthing assmebly and packing instructions). I suspect that in this rushed age only items that can easily be popped in and out of a box would be welcome. there's also the dread issue of 'what if the box goes missing'?

This has obviously worked in the past, but there would be a cost, especially as I think it would need a person with dedicated responsibility for unpacking, tracking and repacking the models would be needed. I don't think it would be fair to expect the editor to take on those extra responsibilities at a time of near chaos!

The buddy system would be simpler, but I hear what people say about the risks.

Perhaps a 'third way' would be to get one of the suppliers to organise an open day alongside a simple exhibition (no prizes, just a display) of forum member's models. We get a modest sized meet-up somehwere, they get some extra trade and it could be timed well away from a major exhibition. Or maybe a club wiould be willing to host a low-key event of this kind, rather than one limited to 'own members' models?
