Being housebound for a while I get to watch a lot of TV, soon it is apparent that TV is a repeat service and I ended up watching documentaries and of all things, Tipping point.

Innate TV programmes do not inspire me. Particularly reality shows, Love island for example, I fear that generation has gone to the dogs.

Supposed short cuts that don’t work – likely most of them! If one is going to do a job, it might just as well be done properly.

but would be good to hear what does not inspre you like stationary engine or traction engine etc.

                      .

O.K. … I will come clean [and admit to a deficiency in my schooling]
                      .

Steam engines became much less fascinating when the Atmospheric principle was abandoned, and they worked on positive pressure.

I distinctly remember thinking [in school Physics class] …is that all there is to it ?

Although I don't find the sight of a Loco or clock inspiring enough to go out and make one some of the workmanship involved in both can certainly be inspiring, maybe we need a third thread for those of us stuck between the two?

+1… Inc 'Pointless' the most appropriately named show I've ever seen. Reality TV…. sad programmes for sad people with sad lives; looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

                            re: the telly being rubbish

I took out a virgin mobile deal to watch telly type stuff on utube etc, I'm a big fan of old documentaries as well as anything else thats interesting

current deals go up to 120gb for 23 bananas a month

With a decent tablet you can view stuff anywhere anytime

Charging is an issue with gadgets but they have magnetic plug adaptors nowadays, these simply fit in to the port and clip on and off, there are lots to choose from at various prices

Bill I'm inspired by almost anything mechanical and old. I marvel at what some clock makers and especially watchmakers made when you consider what tools they had. I would include gunsmiths too

I do not like the reason for doing things in a slap dash manner, excuses like " Quick and dirty" etc. If its worth doing do it well.

                                    I don't like spending hours 'perfecting' a tool for a one-off job that will take 30 seconds…..

My 'quick and dirty' hub extractor, which was welded together on the car out of four pieces of scrap, not only did both of my wheel bearings(normally about £200 per side) but has made a profit on several jobs that I've done for other people. I did knock off the sharp edges with an angle grinder before I used it for the second time…..

Most TV is pretty awful these days. One thing I cannot get my head around is why total fwits go on quiz shows. Maybe it is because they are too stupid to know they are stupid. Even my dog knows the name of the wide collars worn by men in Elizabethan times (Ruff).

Whilst perhaps not inspired by your average Smith's wall clock this on the other hand is certainly an inspiration.

I am not enamoured of many of the subjects of models beloved of others (eg ic engines, clocks) but I can always admire the skill and craftsmanship put into their construction, and on a practical level seeing setups etc in a constructional article for either of these has more than once come in when trying to do something that I am interested in.
