Hi everyone- I hope it is ok to post this.

I am looking for some advice as to where to start.

I have a garage full of tools and machinery as my husband built model steam engines.

Sadly he was diagnosed with cancer during the last lockdown and said he would sell everything’ ASAP as he felt I would be taken advantage of, as I had no knowledge of it’s worth.

He died within 3 weeks, therefore had no time to do anything.

As devastated as I am, I want to move house to be nearer a relative, so I need to clear the garage. He spent hours working/being/playing in the garage and I want to sell items for a fair price, for him as much as for me.

Does anyone know of anyone in Norfolk who would be willing to visit to give me some advice please. I would be happy to pay for their travel expenses and time?
        Thanks in advance.

        Sharon

          Hi Sharon

This is always difficult. It depends on where you are in Norfolk but I'd suggest having a word with the North Norfolk Model Engineering Society. They may be able to offer some guidance. You should find some contact details on their website.

Hi Sharon and please accept my condolences. I think it will help to take pictures of all the machinery and materials even contents of cupboards and draws. it will help to asses what you have to sell. There are members on here who live in Norfolk and may be able to assist you.

            Kind Regards

            David

Hello Sharon, Please accept my condolences for your lost. A difficult time indeed and difficult circumstances in what you wish to do.

I live on the Norfolk Suffolk border to the Eastern side. There is, as has been suggested, the North Norfolk MES and also the Kings Lynn Society as well as the Norwich MES. I believe there is also one at Brandon and the Halesworth society in Suffolk.

As David says it would be best to take some pictures – now is not the time to have visitors of course but transactions could be made by phone etc before that takes place.

As you intend to move however I assume you would like to do this as soon as practical. There is another option that though I am reluctant to suggest it – not ideal from a return point of view – it may solve your problem in the short term at a stroke. That is to contact one of the workshop clearance dealers who advertise in Model Engineer magazine. The main drawback with that is that you will not receive anywhere near it's potential value but it will solve the problem at a stroke.

A friend of mine who had developed unexpected extreme dizzy spells felt it was too unsafe to continue in his workshop. He did the latter, was not too disappointed in the offer made but was extremely pleased that the people concerned handled it well and dealt with the issue in just three hours.

Not an ideal option for most of us who value the equipment and materials we have acquired over the years but one to consider if certain circumstances apply

Good luck with it however you go

              Ramon

We are sorry to learn of your loss.

Keeping one or more of his models may well be a suitable memento, for you, to bring memories of happier times..

A Model Engineering Society will always be a way to get help in disposing of items from a relative who has passed on.

I am sure that one of the Clubs will be willing to help you, in describing the tools and machines, as well as giving an estimate of price. Possibly, they may be able to find a good home for some of the workshop contents, and in sending them to the a new home. Some Clubs have a "For Sale" section on their website, where items could be posted.

I now have somewhere to start and will be making contact with some clubs/people suggested.

I hope I have posted this thank you in the right place!!

                      Best wishes to you all

please contact a club,DONT contact a so-called friendly dealer .There only concern is to rip you off.

Hello Sharon, First let me offer my condolences. There are several clubs who may help. I'm on the north coast near Hunstanton. Message me if you wish and I will try to help. DO NOT use one of several dealers who's only real interest will be a good profit. God bless, Noel.
