            Hi David and thank you.

I don’t make models as such but i make small folding pocket knives, one of the build processes involves milling a relief on the inside which stops the blade rubbing on the handle.
In my search for a mill this forum came up with a lot of useful information hence me joining.

Hello Andy and welcome. That's certainly a different use for a mill from most people on here.

Knife making is really big in the USA, part of the culture

Probably to to with the new frontier etc, they make some lovely bits of kit

I got a tiny lockknife on one of my visits and lost it about 10 years later, still miss it to this day

                  Welcome Andy,

I live in Sydney and originally had a Seig SX3 mill and was very pleased with it. I pushed it to its limits, building a 6" scale traction engine but after a 5 years, it started having problems with the electronic motor controllers. The supplier that I purchased it from no longer supplied Seig products and I replaced it with a slightly bigger mill with a standard AC motor and gearbox drive. As long as you have backup support from your supplier it should be OK.

Good luck and I hope to see what you have made with it.

                  Paul.

Welcome from a South Cheshire bloke. I have a ME mate in Wales who used to make the same things as yourself, but these days he makes novelty torches to sell in the USA.

                      Cheers, Dek.

                        Hi Andy,

In your opening post, you say: ' I’ll have loads of questions to ask about the mill '.

If the digital version of the MEW magazine works, I would strongly suggest that you subscribe to it.

Once subscribed, you can look at the back issues of the magazine, starting from issue MEW 261.

Issue 261 starts off a 'Milling for beginners' series based on the SX2.7, written by Jason, who is one of the moderators on this forum.

The series continues in alternate issues of the magazine, 15 parts, which ends in issue 289. Jason has a thread on the forum based on the series. See link .

In the absence of a 'hands on' coarse, I would suggest that most of the questions you have about the mill, along withe the associated tooling will probably be answered in the series.

You can get digital archive access for £1 at the moment so silly not to.

I’ve subscribed and having read a couple of copies digital reading isn’t for me. It’s a brilliant series and just what I need so Is it possible to buy back dated hard copies of the magazine?
                              thanks

                                      Hi Andy,

I was trained in pocket knife making by a Sheffield little mester. Traditional style folding knives and miniature fixed blades.

I still make the occasional knife in between all the other projects.

Let me know what type of knife you make, milling the liners is not something I do but modern makers seem to machine materials a lot more.
