      Hi All
I am new to this forum, currently undertaking a project of trying to finish a Westbury Sealion engine…

Im a retired motor mechanic who has been building model cars and tinkering with pre built model engines for some time but have undertaken a project that has been left to me but seems to be a little above my skill set.

Im here looking for guidance and advice whilst also learning more about the model engineering.

      Mick

          Hello Mick,

          Welcome to the Forum.

There will be no shortage of help for you here. I am not into models as machine tools are my interest, but there are plenty who will be happy to answer your questions.

          Regards Brian

Hello Mick and welcome (from another Brian).

I think there are a few car modellers on here so hopefully they will be in touch later.

I normally early model steam traction engines but I've just started a 1/4 scale model of Henry Ford's first car, the 1896 Quadricycle. Only just made the chassis so far but I only started yesterday (it's a VERY simple chassis.

Hello John, I live in east Lancashire a little one horse town in Rossendale where nothing much ever happens, I am currently trying to finish a project that was started by someone else but I think I am out of my depths on this one, I have a westbury sealion engine that needs to be completed but I don't posses the equipment to do the task so I need to enlist the services of a skilled model engineer to help me with this quest, do you know anyone who would be willing to assist me with this quest? perhaps a retired engineer looking for a challenge as well as earning some extra money, if you do please let me know thanks Mick

Hello Brian W & Brian H & Thank you both for your welcoming message, I was going to give you both a message of thank's at the end of my response to John but my tablet battery died! it doesn't last very long so most of the time I have to write as quick as I can, the reply I sent to John applies to both of you as well as anybody that might be able to help me, I look forward to any feedback on this matter, kind regards Mick M .

                    Welcome Mick,

Seal and Sealion are challenging (I have a half-built seal I was given that someone gave up on half way – they had modified the big ends and there isn't space in the crankcase for them to turn.)

Might be worth making a relatively simple steam engine first to develop your skills, then if you take it steady you should be able to complete the IC engine. Plenty of people here who can offer advice.

                    Neil

Hi Neil, Thank's for getting back to me, the problem I have is that i don't have the machinery to do this kind of work & my eyesight isn't as good as it should be that is why I am hoping to find somebody who could do the work for me there isn't a fantastic amount of work to be done and I am more than happy to pay £20 per hour, the work is mainly to the cylinder head, the rocker arms & shaft need to be made, the spark plug holes need to be bored out or drilled, recessed & threaded, the camshaft bushes need making & fitting the camshaft needs slotting & keying, the valves need further turning & facing, the seats need cutting the cam gear needs slotting & tapering. the pistons need turning (blank castings supplied) the crankshaft & drive gear needs slotting & keying, the timing gear pedestals need making & fitting, the oil & water pumps need mounting to the front cover after the driveshaft hole has been drilled out & the oil feed pipes need making & fitting to the relevant flanges which need to be drilled & tapped, the crankshaft center bearing halve shell needs an oil hole drilling and the distributor needs making. I have the original plans/blueprints for the engine in imperial measurements. if you know anybody who would be willing to do this work for me please let me know. kind regards Mick M.
