        Hi all.

I’ve been banging various bits of material with various tools since I can remember.
I have a reasonable workshop, and have recently done lots of work on my Sabel lathe to get it into a more accurate and useable state.
My latest ambition is to make a Stuart model of some kind, but I don’t have a mill at the moment.
I will be looking for advice regards milling on the lathe, as I’ve not got a vertical slide or a mill or even a 4 jaw at this point in time

Anyway, looking forward to some banter,

        Jim

Hello Jim and welcome. My first model from castings was a V10 by Stuart but it was so long ago I cannot remember if a had a mill or a vertical slide!

Either way, these Stuart models are excellent for people who have little or no experience with castings and Stuart castings are normally of excellent quality, but if you find one that isn't, they will immediately replace it.

Hopefully someone with more experience of using a vertical slide will be along soon with some more informative answers.

All the best with your modelling and please keep us posted on your decisions, they are sure to be helpful to others.

          Brian

            Thanks Brian.
First I need to get a new backplate for the Sabel to fit a 4 Jaw.
            I think I fancy the D10

Not far from me in Gravesend. The Sabel is a nice small machine based of course on the South Bend 9". I have a South Bend heavy 10 nearing completion.

I never saw a Sabel in the flesh but all the examples I read of seem to suffer from pronounced wear in the cross slide ways. Even a minor amount of scraping can give a drastic improvement if you're getting any rocking in the cross or compound slides.

                                Hi Pete.
I have recently replaced the cross slide screw and nut on the Sabel with one from a Boxford which has improved the accuracy no end.
The compound slide had about 0.5mm of backlash due to wear of the dial and mating face which I have now shimmed with brass and it too is much better.
I've adjusted the ways on both with the gibs but would be interested in hearing more about your idea of scraping.
immust admit that I’m not a trained engineer at all so most finer techniques are unknown to me.
                                Thanks for your ideas.

                                Jim

                                              Welcome on board

I think Jason posted back along saying he made a Stuart 10H on the lathe without needing a mill but stand to be corrected.

Amended to add as follows posted by Neil – Moderator.

I followed the Andrew Smith/Pengwern booklet that Stuart sell and did all of a 10V on the lathe. For the 10H you don't have to machine the standard, although the bed is more challenging.
