4 Jaw Independent Chuck For The Sieg C0 Baby Lathe.

Hello, I'm new on this forum. I have a Sieg C0 Baby Lathe which I bought about 10/12 years ago and would like to get a 4 jaw independent chuck for it. I have found 50mm and 65mm 4 jaw chucks on eBay but they're made in India and according to what I've researched are of very dubious quality. Chronos sell a 70mm 4 jaw independent chuck with the correct thread of M14x1 which looks pretty good but not sure if it would fit okay being bigger than the original 3 jaw chuck. Has anyone any advice on this? I am retired due to ill health so I don't have a lot of money to play around with. Thanks, Pat

Thanks for the comment. I have looked online and found that genuine Unimat chucks are a bit expensive. Having said that, Chronos do one for just over £50 but as luck would have it are out of stock. I have emailed them to see if they're getting any more. Pat

If you are worried about chucks made in India, maybe you should check the origin of the chronos product? 🙂

As always, the quality of items for sale depends on the quality control checks – the ‘pass’ quality goes one way and the rejects find their way to lesser sellers. At least with Chronos, you have a better guarantee of quality – from wherever they originate.

I think that you're probably right about the quality control as the chuck that Chronos supply is more than likely to be made in India. I trust Chronos as they give good backup should there be a problem. Was tempted to get a chuck from India as even with postage they're quite cheap but – cheap to buy cheaply made!

I think Chronos stock a lot of Indian made gear (Soba/Sobha), whose products have improved over the years.

A major advantage of Chronos is that if you should get a problem, it's easy to get it sorted.

The stuff from the better companies in India is good but the very cheap stuff is apparently often made by random small subcontractors and the quality is patchy.

I think you should maybe talk to ArcEuro before buying anything – they told me when I bought my Sieg C0 that (IIRC) either the Unimat 3 has a register diameter the Sieg C0 doesn't have or t'other way about, so caution and/or a modification might be needed if you buy a Unimat chuck.

Arc are advertising a 4-jaw for the C0 even though I think they've dropped the machine itself, and I've found their products and advice to be very good.

And we all know that sometimes things made cheaply are hugely better than expensively-made ones.

If you are going for Arc Euro, the 60 mm 4 jaw independant slim body steel chuck Stock Code is 040-040-02095, priced at £59.98. A semi finished Backplate with a 14 x 1 thread and 14mm register is 62mm OD, and will require finish machining for the face and Chuck register OD, and drilling for the retaining studs. Stock Code is 040-060-10400 priced at £9.72

Since an order for both is less than £75 it will incur a shipping charge of £3.60. All these prices are VAT inclusive.

Based on my experience, you are likely to receive the items within a couple of days.of placing the order.

Most of the small 14×1 chucks on ebay are made by "sanou" in china.

They are OK for the money, the chuck that came fitted to your C0 will probably be made in the same factory so it will give you some idea of quality.

I've heard back from Arceurotrade and they don't do a direct fit 4 jaw chuck for the Sieg Co mini lathe. They obviously do the chuck and adapter plate but my machining skills aren't that great so I'll see what Chronos can do. They have a 70mm 4 jaw independent chuck with an M14x1 thread mounted on an adapter plate to fit a 3" rotary table so perhaps that's the way to go. I have an old 50mm 3 jaw chuck with a slightly smaller thread than M12 which I could possibly sell with the adapter plate to recoup a bit of money. The buyer could recut the M14x1 thread to match the chuck. Thanks very much for all the help and advice given – very much appreciated.

Update on the hunt for a 50mm 4 jaw independent chuck for sieg C0 lathe. I took the plunge and bought a chuck from India via eBay. It arrived and on inspection can be deemed as adequate – you obviously get what you pay for I guess. Having said that, I'm sure the chuck will work okay now that I've fine tuned it. Thanks again for all the help and advice. I'd upload a picture but can't figure out how to do that?

Thought people might like to see the original 3 jaw chuck which is actually quite accurate. It looks slightly bigger than the 4 jaw chuck but it's near enough the same size.

Another good reason to have the little Sieg C0 lathe is that it's quite small and lightweight so is easy to use on the dining table – wife allowing 😊

Yes, I remember making my Stuart 10V on my Unimat 3 with a 4 jaw – I could only afford 1 chuck – in a tiny corner of a tiny loft.

I sold it in 2000 when I got a Myford, but bought a Sieg C0 in 2015 as a machine to use in temporary accommodation. Now I've got the Warco, I still use the C0 very occasionally just for the hell of it.

I've actually got 7×14 Chinese lathe from Chester Hobby which I use but it's on a high bench and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to stand for long periods. I've got heart problems which sap my energy. If I have to move the 7×14 I have to get one of my sons to do it as it could be dangerous for me to lift anything heavy. The C0 lathe is light enough at the moment for me to lift so is great. I've always liked doing small stuff so the C0 lathe does exactly what I want so I'm quite happy.
