      Hi all,

Long time engineeriring doodler here, mainly 16mm/ft scale railways and smaller live steam things :

      one-pound-burrell.jpg

Always experimenting with new ideas so I'm making my first excursions into 3d printing. However, I'm currently nursing a very sick NC milling machine, so I am hoping for some assistance.

That probably means I wil be taking more than I can give, for the moment, so please be patient with me

              Hi Bitzer

Just curious if your little Burrell is based on any particular full size engine.

                Thanks for the welcome, guys.

                Hi Phil,

It's based on a 10NHp Burrell road loco, but not any one in particular. I took the main dimensions from various GA drawings in the book "St. Nicholas Works" and then used photos for the details, so there are some details from "Ex-Mayor" and bits of "Clyde" in there. Ex-Mayor used to work around South Yorkshire (well before my time!) so a future project will be a showman's version.

The wheels look rather too heavy as they are temporary plastic ones from a Lledo model, so I have to be careful not to turn the burner up too far! When I get my milling m/c up and running again one of the jobs I have to do is fret out some brass spokes so I can fabricate new ones.

                      .

If that's a live steam engine … some detail shots would be good to see.

maybe when you are fitting the metal wheels

                        Hi Michael,

Yes it is, but it's nothing special, apart from being small (4mm/ft).

A simple pot boiler with an oscillating cylinder, 3mm bore x 4mm stroke. The cylinder is hidden behind the side screens and the visible cylinder block is only an empty shell.

Firing is by butane gas using a trough burner in the firebox and belly tanks. Run on one filling is about 2 minutes.

It was intended to run with the "Faller" magnetic road system (the guide skate is just to the right of the pound coin) but really it runs too fast to be authentic. I am trying to draw up a Sentinel lorry using the same type of engine, which should look better running at speed.

My mk 1 eyeballs are not really up to marking out such small stuff, which is why I need my CNC mill running again!
