It's true that geographical humour doesn't always travel well. Birmingham (England), a place not to be confused with Birmingham (Alabama), has more canals than Venice (Italy). In consequence Birmingham (England), a sprawling commercial city in the Black Country, is known to us Brits as 'the Venice of the North'.
Sadly, no Italian ever calls Venice 'the Birmingham of the South'!
Try the joke out in Geneva (Alabama) and see if anyone laughs. It doesn't work in Switzerland…
