Hi, I'm a recently retired professional engineer. I spent the last 34 years working in the aerospace industry, mostly behind a desk. I just purchased a Warco WM250 lathe which I've installed in my workshop (which is Grade II listed !!). I haven't done any turning since I was doing my training back in the 1970s but I've managed to make a couple of simple items and even managed to part off one of them without breaking the tool. I'm keen to find some projects and would welcome any suggestions. Thanks in anticipation !

          Hello Ian,

Welcome to the forum. If you can part off OK anything is possible!

Hello Ian and welcome, from another retired engineer in the areospace industry. I don't know about you but I wonder how I managed to make time for work.

I'm now working on an 1858 Burrell traction engine in 1/8th scale.

Hi Ian, another retired professional engineer but from the plastics manufacturing industry living in Wellington Somerset. I have recently bought some Warco kit and am trying to clear out the garage to get access to create some swarf.

My first experience of metal work was when I was a trainee engineer at BCL Bridgwater in the late 70's and 80's.

              Whereabouts are you?

              Steve

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome.

Steve, I'm in Dunster but I've only lived down here since I retired, Before that we lived in Taplow (on the Bucks/Berks border). I worked for Martin-Baker (the ejection seat company who have recently been in the press for unfortunately the wrong reasons). What Warco kit have you bought ? I'm very pleased with the lathe and like you I had to make room in my garage for it. I've got one half of the garage sorted out with a bench along the full length. The other half is a complete mess !

I also volunteer one day a week with the West Somerset Railway (in the shed at Minehead) which is great fun.

                Ian

                        Thanks Brian

Found it – looks well, and good to see you are making a non run of the mill model.

Hi Ian, I bought the GH1322 on the advice of a friend who has a similar machine. I have not really yet been able to find the time to put it through its paces but have produced a few items including cutting screw threads which proved to be much easier than I thought. I must say that I am very happy with what it can do although I seem to be fighting a never ending battle to liberate the space needed in the garage to get to work on things properly.

                          Cheers Steve

                            Hi Steve,

Wow, the GH1322 looks like a serious piece of kit compared to my humble WM250. Good luck with your projects and keep in touch.

                            All the best,

                            Ian
