      Hi everybody – I'm actually Wiglaf's mum, but he's 7 so I don't let him post yet 😀

      So we've been doing the steam rally circuit for about the last three years and last Christmas he got his first Mamod TE1A.

      – predictably, she is called Tia.

      This year, we're hoping to build a threshing machine for Tia to run, but in the meantime he's working on getting her to run my old hand-crank Singer sewing machine (provided the TE1A has enough grunt to run it! – dad thinks not…)

      So we're all ears as to engineering plans – and what do you guys think about running the sewing machine off her?

          I have the Mamod steam roller (about 45 years old!) as well as the roadster and a stationary engine (both independently rescued by a binman friend some years ago).

          I very much doubt the TE1A has the power to run anything like a sewing machine, but encourage him to experiment, he can only learn things!

          Much better to get a couple of the workshop tools which it will run happily is you chock the wheels to keep the driving band tight, although the prices are scary for what you get. I'm sure you could find second hand ones for rather less, look out at those steam rallies.

          I have the hammer and power press (both of similar age to my steam roller and they work well if gently oiled).

            Welcome Wiglaf (and mum),

            I used to have a Mamod very like that one and had loads of fun with it. Mine worked on Meths. One day I set fire to my bed whilst attempting to top up the burner whilst it was stll alight. I hope you're a more sympathetic mother than mine was, though I admit she was slightly provoked.

            Yes the engine could be made to turn a sewing machine, but only very slowly. You would need a gearbox or pulleys to gear down the fast turning flywheel. The slower the final output of the gearbox, the more turning power will be available. Linking it to the sewing machine will be a challenge, so dad is right to have doubts.

            Might be easier to start with something simpler. For example, the engine could be made to turn a Lazy Susan fairly easily.

              Some Meccano is the best value. Then make the things to be run. I still remember my steam crane running in the kitchen on the fire safe but rather cold tiled floor.
