I am mid fifties, used to work as architectural model maker and apprenticed in Zürich and then worked in London for a bit. I am now mainly interested in Boats as a hobby modler, have done a bit of RC sailing – sailed for real as well. The reason I came across this site is that I have a dream of making a working model of a trireme. What I would love to do is to do this with audio sound effects such as drum beating stroke timing and anything else that might raise an eyebrow! Can anyone point me towards how I might achieve this? I am sure I can source the sounds themselves or make them up myself, but what kind of electronics; situated in the boat and triggered by RC?

      Thanks for reading this.

          Hello Paul

          Welcome to the forum.

          "Ramming Speed!"

I would have thought a fairly simple arrangement of cranks on the oars driven by a rod moved by a disk would do?

Paul, for sound effects look around model railway suppliers and forums. There are several devices they use for train sounds that can be loaded with different sounds. You might find some examples of them being used on boats on modelboatmayhem the leading boating forum.

Hacksaw – don't forget the church key to tie to the end of the kite string.

                    Good luck!

                      Who was that? Franklin?

I thought he sat under a tree , flying a kite in a storm..lightning hit the tree , an apple fell from the said tree and he discovered gravity at the same time…

…..whilst calculating the expansion of the universe on the back of an envelope!

I guess the school book picture of Benjamin Franklin holding his knuckle to a key hanging from a kite string being flown into a thunder cloud has left a lasting impression. On me. As the story goes, he got away with it, though I never understood how,

During my childhood several people were killed sheltering from a thunderstorm under a tree at the annual Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling event. The tree was struck by lightning.

Perhaps one of these kit digital recorders with playback of pre-recorded sounds triggered by the RC controller?

The example in the link has a 500mW audio output which may be loud enough. If not it would be easy to add an amplifier module.
