I've been engaged with experimental engineering for many years, but it seems that the projects I really wanted to do never received the priority they ought to have done. My "New Year Resolution" is to change all that. So far so good. Despite the constant support of my wife Barbara (who is a more highly qualified engineer than I am,) the only thing that concerns me is the isolation. Here on our farm in Ireland, we are about as far removed from others of similar ilk as we could be. One man projects, like one woman projects, are difficult to keep on track. I am an optimist.

Optimist is made up of two words "Opti" meaning vision. and "Mist" being a fog.

You could set up a Mens' Shed in a spare farm building and then you would be less isolated.

This forum is a bit like a pub with no beer and all the talk is sort of technical not sport. You can make a few virtual friends on here and toss about your ideas. Sometime you even get helpful advice if John s isn't off with his highly qualified engineering girlfriend.wink

            Hi,

I like your definition of "optimist". What about "pessimist"?

Welcome to the forum Jim, are you by any chance related to the Jim Cahill of the SMEE? – he once wrote the story of his grandfather, another Jim Cahill from County Donegal.

That one's easy. 'pes' is czech for 'dog' and the root of pest. Add the mist and you're hounded by a fog of vermin
