I am a fairly new convert to model engineering – but have been interested in modelling since my childhood – model airoplanes and r/c etc. I am a creative sole who has discovered a new passion – my ML7 lathe! (for which I need all the advice I can get!)

I currently have a couple of projects – I am turning a brass cannon – and also making a small beam engine (my first).

Look forward to chatting with you all.

      Cheers Roger

          Hi Roger and welcome.
I just did a brass 32lb naval canon, based it on the canon around Deal castle.

Hello Rodger and welcome. I had an ML7 some years ago and made a clutch for it, following an article in Model Engineering Workshop magazine. Much better than turning the motor on and off..If you would like a copy of the article send me your email details via a PM.. My young neighbour will know how to send it as an attachment..John

Hi John C and John F

Thank you both for your warm welcome –

John C – I would be very interested to hear how you went about turning your cannon barrell and fixing trunions etc. I have just completed the easy bit on mine – the carriage! so have the barrel to come. Do you have photos?

John F – thank you for your offer of info on the ML7 – yes please I would be delighted to increase my knowledge. In fact I have a bit of a problem at the moment that you might be able to advise me on (I have posted it in help section). But I am in the middle of replacing the back gear on my lathe as both the bullwheel and the lower backgear assembly had lost teeth. My problem is how to dismantle the headstock spindle. I have managed ok up to a collar/spacer – this is pushed on to the spindle upto the pulley cone and I have to remove this to get the pulley and backgear off. Help!

              Roger

                Hi Roger,
I’m living out in Cambridge (NZ) so not too far away. I have an ML7 but I modified mine to have a multi-V belt some years back and don’t remember what was involved in getting the old pulley off. I do have to dismantle mine sometime. The backgear has one tooth missing and I have bought the spare but have not got around to putting it on.

32 carr.jpgI had to do each taper between the reinforce rings seperately, then I bored for the trunnion  and heat shrank it in. Then did the main bore with a long series bit.

                    Hi John C

Thanks for the great photos – very nice guns – did you do all the designing yourself or did you follow plans? I got some plans off the net for mine – I am a little nervous of slicing into my nice bar of brass! But that is my next step. I will post pictures if I can work out how to.

                    Regards Roger

                        Hi Neil

Thanks for your welcome – yes I am very proud of it as it is my first lathe and I am enjoying learning about it.

As I do things 'right' – I get a great sense of satisfaction which encourages me to learn more.

                        Roger
