Hi, my name is Wayne and i live in Warrington Cheshire. I am a member of Warrington & District Model Engineering Society which i joined club 10months ago.I have a background radio controlled model aircraf, but now trying my hand at model engineering as i own my dads lathe warco 918 etc and my farthers unfinished 3.5" Chesapeake & Ohio Lima Greenbrier 4-8-4 steam locomotive 605 "THOS. NELSON, JR." after my dad passed away in 2004 and was left to me,it was in many boxes after it was striped down after Model Engineering Exabition in Harrogate in 2003 ready for painting etc so I have a task ahead of me of putting it back together as my dad scaled most of it from books and photos. I also own a 1.5" Alchin traction engine which was also built by my farther. I have added photos in my gallery and started a thread of the online build. THANK YOU

                      Welcome Wayne,

I'm sure your dad would be chuffed to know you are going to paint and reassemble his model.

The book "How (not) to paint a model locomotive" by Chris Vine is very good – a bit scary for someone as bad at painting as me, to be honest, but it will tell you how to do the job perfectly, and even if you don't quite reach utter perfection, it will help you do a good job.

                      Photos, please!

                      Neil

Hi Neil thanks for the information very kind of you the engine was in mostly raw state as you can see from exabition photo . I have sprayed model in satin black 600deg c bar/q paint brought it up to temperiture to cure paint with hot air gun i use for aircraft covering etc and colour turned out like original eggshell.Sprayed smokebox cured in oven to harden paint and repainted lower half of locomotive and wheels etc and tender as you can see in latest photos, and i turned out rearly well very pleased with finish

                        wayne

I've seen the photos now Wayne, the finish looks very even, and a satin finish seems right for those big American machines.

Beautiful model Wayne, great job on the paint so far.

Do you have the running boards for the locomotive? If you have seen photos of the full size engine you will see they had substantial and complex running boards and lots of auxiliary equipment mounted to them. They will make the engine look even heavier and more tough, like the workhorses they were.

Is the locomotive powered by an electric motor?

                            Cheers JD

Hi Jd thank you for your kind compliments,my dad had made running boards they can be seen on photo of my dad at harrogate model engineering exabition in 2003. They where left at his house but did not rearlise that i had left them till over 2years later, as there was so much stuff to pick up. The house had been sold etc. That Is the problem i do not know what is missing until i am building model have just finished making a new pair of brass running boards and pair off new steps also as they where fitted to running boards. i will show them on my forum build. The model was built from 3.5" gauge MARTIN EVANS Baldwin Columbia type plans 4-8-4 but the model is a completly differant as my dad turned it into 3.5" gauge chesapeake & ohio lima greenbrier 4.8.4 locomotive. baker valve gear which he scaled of drawings photos etc steam turbine for 12v electricity ,steam pumps in front of locomotive for air brakes etc larger cab than baldwin . The engine measures approx 73" with tender . The engine is not electric it is steam powered i have boiler but need to sort out some problems with small leaks .The boiler holds nearly 7 ltr water very large engine for 3.5" gauge its as big as a 5" gauge steam locomotive. Hope this has helped you out.

                              regards Wayne

PS thanks for your interest in model JD
