Hi, for some reason the magazine reader has stopped working on my desktop machine

        Win 8.1 running Firefox v57 64bit

has always been fine and still OK on my iPad

        Cheers, Martin

I get a message saying that the page needs Adobe Flash which may slow Firefox and gives the option to allow it or not. The sooner Flash is removed the better. It is unreliable and insecure IMHO.

Using FF 57.0 64 bit on Linux Mint.

Working OK for me on Windows 7 Professional on my desktop computer. Firefox 56.0 64-bit [don't like 57].

Perhaps it's the changes from 56.0 to 57.0 [which I don't understand!] that have stopped it working. Have you checked Flash compatibility with FF 57?

Is it the archive or the offline reader for pocketmags you are having trouble with?

Presumably the archive since the PM reader doesn't work through a browser (and stopped working on Win8.1 ages ago anyway).

FWIW, the online (archive) reader works just fine for me – FF 45.9.0 ESR Windows 8.1 (64)

                        Hello Martin,

It may be an issue with Firefox getting sniffy about flash, we haven't changed the site.

We will be changing to HTML5, but the majority of our users are still reliant on flash so (like the BBC and many other major websites) we are sticking with it for the present.

A HTML5 version of the archive is already 'served' by default to Mac users so I assume that there is some way you can get the archive to appear on a PC in HTML5 but I don't know how it is done…

                        Neil

I wonder if that is why I am no longer able to print archive magazines from my Mac. It was useful to be able take prints of an article into the workshop, particularly drawings, but I lost this feature some time ago.

Martin, it's entirely possible that the highly up to date (albeit, inevitably these days, a beta masquerading as full-release) 64-bit version of FF that you mentioned has already changed to HTML flash by default, causing your problem. You could check that and also whether it still allows you to use an Adobe Flash plugin.

                                  Hi,

I can access the archive (ME + MEW) on my desktop using Windows 7 + Firefox.(Version 57.0.1 64-bit)

I had to activate Flash the first time I tried, there is about a 5-10 second delay before the cover is displayed but I can read the issues OK (Well I only tried the latest 2-3 of ME & MEW)

                                  Dave

I think they still rely on Flash because that's what the site uses. HTML5 was released in 2014 and all major browsers accept it. Adobe announced earlier this year that they will stop supporting Flash in about two years time.

As an example Facebook started serving HTML5 video to all browsers by default as long ago as 2015. If you can't display HTML5 in your browser you need to install the updates.

This is what I was told a few months ago:

Yes the DE's are hosted on different server to the main sites, also the DE's already support HTML5/older this is how they work on iPhones etc which do not support Flash. At the moment the desktop version will look for Flash and default to this, we are planning to switch to HTML5 as the default with a fail back to Flash if needed as not all our customers have support for HTML5 on their devices. We would also need to remake the older DE's for them to work over HTML5 as default, but this going to be done early next year.

I've been looking at replacing the software we use to make the DE's for a while now but so far I've not found one that creates HTML5 versions reliably or better then the app we use at the moment.

Interestingly, although I get a blank grey screen, my mouse diappears where the pages should be showing and re appears at the other side….
