I've created a 3D computer model and there are some anomalies that I could use some advice on.

        1) The position of the cylinders appears to be too far back to give sufficient room for the brake hangers.

        2) The same issue also shows the crosshead fouling the gland on the cylinder cover.

        3) I understand that there's a set of valve gear modifications by Don Ashton, but I have no idea where to get those from.

My instinct is to stretch the whole of the front of the locomotive by 1/8" to give adequate room for these things. Thank goodness for computer modelling,I'd be pulling my hair out if this had been built to the drawings.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on any of the above? It's possible I'm wrong about this, but I can't see the error if there is one.

Don Ashton's design suggestions for 'Speedy' valve gear were published in Engineering in Miniature, Volume 30, Nunber 7, January 2009, pages 234 -236 inc., under the title 'Speedy Revisited'.

There were also a couple of follow-up letters, but they do not seem to have contributed anything directly to the technical design.

As you probably know, Mr Ashton is an active participant in the other forum where you have posted your query, so if you have any technical difficulties on that front he wil be able to assist you directly.

I'm sure a 'Speedy' builder wil be along shortly to assist with your design conflicts.

          Regards,

          Phil

Thanks Phil, I've been in touch with Don Ashton and have now completely reworked all of the valve dimensions to match the line drawing of his layout. There are a lot of changes required but it's pretty much sorted now on the 3D Computer model.

Don has been very communicative and helpful, it's made what could have been a nightmare into something pleasurable. I do feel for anyone who attempts to make this engine exactly to the plans, only to find that thing simply don't fit or work as well as they should. It's a sorry state of affairs when you consider how many of these have been made.

Hi Ian, I think Weary is referring to this one…. Model Engineering Clearing House.
