If you add up the lower dimensions of the main frames it differs from the overall length of 15.625.

A review of the above post.

After inquiring about water cut frames for the gauge 3 Dee the following errors emerged.

The overall length of the main frames is given as 15.625″ but if the individual dimensions at the bottom of the frame are added together, the overall length works out at 15.7195″

On the tender frames the length is 11.063″ but the individual dimensions give 11.064″

The tender dimension is only a thou out but which dimension is correct on the main frames.

            Hi Eric
Sorry for the slip. The length between the inner ends of the bogie wheel arches should
read 1.437 and between the middle of that dimension and the forward end should read
3.031. These changes have been notified to SCISS so the cut items should be correct. If
you care to email me I will send you a new drawing – dickallan@btinternet.com

This is the real reason for measuring all dimensions from a single datum – you never have two ways of adding up the same distance so no-one can catch you out

Seriously though, it’s one reason I like using nice round and fractional measurements because these sort of errors (which we all make) stand out more easily, at least to me.

                Hi Neil
Interesting! Actually the error arose because during construction
of the loco I adjusted the position of the bogie, corrected my latest
drawing but failed to communicate it to ME. Another point in favour of
what you suggest is that it helps the laser and water cutting guys to
set up their machines. Trouble is, old habits die hard!
                Dick
