      Buffer and drag beam

Drawing 3 shows the buffer and drag beams as being 0.844 wide but the text states they made from 0.750 x 0.125 BMS which is correct. Also the cut out for the pump by-pass screw is not dimensioned.

          Hi Eric.
Can’t help you much with the first part of your query.Looking at the drawings,I wonder if the author has got his loco buffer beams mixed up with those for the tender.Beams cut from 0.750″ x 0.125″ would fit the tender,so my guess is that the dimension 0.844 could be right for the loco.Someone ought really to have checked this before publication. (I’ll get me coat!).

As for water jet cutting,I have used Sciss Ltd in the past and been very happy with the results. There website is http://www.sciss.co.uk/
          Good luck with the loco

            Hello Eric,
I have the gauge one dee book, and the dimensions for the buffer & drag
beams are 625. If you multiply this by the factor of 1.35 you get .84375, therefore the
.750 dimension must be wrong . As for the by-pass screw,
In the gauge one book all it says is , and I quote “remove hatched area from right hand
bracket to allow passage of by-pass screw.” So it would appear that the dim is not
critical as long as there is room for the screw.
I hope the above is of use to you.
If you wish you could purchase the dee book from gauge one association,
            their website is www. gaugeone.org

              Hi Colin,
well done, that is precisely where .844 buffer beams came from. However, the prototype beams are 1ft4in which scales down to nearly .750 in G3 or .525 in G1. BUT the problem is that, unlike the prototype, the chassis allows for bogie wheel cutouts to enable locos to get round our tightish corners. This in turn gives rise to sightly high buffers which can be lowered only by widening the beam. Hence .844 which will also apply to the tender in due course. There is another small error in Drawing 2 where the width between the centres of the bogie arches is given as 3.265 wheras it should be 3.625. Rather an obvious bit of typing finger trouble at ME! They also spelt my name wrongly. My problem at the moment is trying to get a reply from ME to my emails but I think there has been a problem in the editorial office.
I will be delighted to help with any problems that builders might have and yes,Sciss have the details for the beams and frames though the latter may need updating.

                Hi All,

Not sure if it has been noted before, but there is an error in section BB of the cylinder dwg on pg 849 of ME 4419 for Dee. A sketch has been posted in my album.

There should be drilled ports through the centres of the valve bores for exhaust, not a central hole as shown on section BB.
